New owner needs some help

I have searched for these answers and haven't found the answers I'm looking for. I could very well have overlooked them as I'm new to the forum. I recently purchased a 1993 Yamaha 115 V4. It had previously been used in saltwater so I had it serviced, carbs rebuilt, stator replaced, etc. It's a strong running engine. I just bought a new boat to put it on and have yet to mix the fuel/oil. The boat has an 18 gallon tank and I'm curious if the ratio for gas to oil is 50:1, and how that might break down into ounces to gallons (not good at math). The other question is, is Yamalube the best oil to use as a mixture?

Thanks so much for all the help,
jce

I had a Yamaha 115HP about like yours but it had oil injection called autolube, so no mixing was required. Are you sure yours is a premix motor, without the autolube feature? Anyway, for premixing use the 50:1 ratio, which is about a pint(16 ounces) of oil to 6 gallons of gas. The Yamalube is fine but I switched several years ago to the Pennzoil 100% Synthetic Outboard Motor Oil(Walmart $27/gallon), less smoke, carbon, etc. Use Yamaha Ringfree all the time and install a fuel/water separater(Walmart $25), easy 2 screw installation, save yourself a lot of grief with water/ethanol/debris in fuel system. I ran the hound out of my 115 for several years with no problems, darn good motor! Check/replace water pump impeller?...

Robert,
Thanks for the reply. I had the water pump replaced and the impeller was checked. I haven't seen an autolube feature on the motor....no place i've seen to put oil. I bought it used and didn't receive an owners manual so I'm not 100% sure about anything concerning the motor, unfortunately.

As an update, the motor DOES NOT have the autolube feature.

Re: New owner needs some help

Check around under the cowl for a plastic oil tank for the autolube system. If it's premix, then that's just fine, in fact I prefer premix for the simplicity of it and just another system not to have to worry about maintaining. See if you can locate those 10MM brass hex head carb drain plugs and think about draining the carbs a couple of times a year to help eliminate any water or debris that naturally accumulates in those float chambers. It's a darn good preventive maintenance item, if you like messing with the motor. Good Luck!

You can scout around on-line for a Yamaha Outboard Operators Manual and maybe get it that way, lots of good, basic information.
