New outboard or new old boat?

Hi all
My old Mercurey 110 (9.8hp) motor is getting tired & I don't really want to spend anymore time & money on it. So my problem is, it looks like a new outboard runs 3-4K, while I see complete boats on Craigs list for the same (& some cheeper!) My boat is just a 12' and I fish the Monterey bay, which means the first breath of wind I need to run for the harbor.
Any opinions?

Is this an outboard from the 70's or 80's? You should be able to pick up a decent 9hp for ~$1000.00. When I say decent I mean late 90's - early 2000's and if treated right it should last you another 20 years.

I second the above, unless you have plans for this new purchase for the next 20-30 years, used will be just fine.

Well I guess that makes sense, I'm just a little gun shy when it comes to used motors, but then again all the ones I've dealt with are really old!
Thanks for the advice.

The good news is that outboards are really simple. If the compression is good and consistent across all cylinders, the water pump is working and it shifts smoothly from F-R-N then there's nothing seriously wrong with it.

It's MUCH more risky jumping in on a new old boat. That's something to be gun shy about right there!

I've seen Tohatsu 9.8 hp for $1850 free shipping on the internet.

After reading up on these I don't think I'm interested in one.

I'd love a 20 or 25hp evenrude, depending on weight.

Are you sure? $1100 is a helluva deal! I can arrange everything for you if you'd like or you can just drive down and grab it! If I had a small boat I'd be on this like white on rice!

Here's another one I'd consider.

-a little more money, but it's 10 years newer and it's a 4 stroke.

Why not? Tohatsu makes a very excellent outboard. They are the manufacturer for Nissan and Mercury smaller outboards. I have a 1992 Nissan 9.9 made by Tohatsu that is pure awesome.
