Hi All. I purchased a New (only 4 hours run-time) Nissan NS5B 1996 Short_Shaft and need to replace the motor on my Nissan NS5B 1986 Long Shaft. Is this possible and can anyone share any procedures for the best way to do this. Any help would be appresiated... StarGazer

A few years ago I asked the same question about an 18hp Nissan. If you want to tear down the lower unit you can replace the drive shaft, add a spacer to the mid section and replace the shift rod. The cheaper and less hassle way would be to find a donor motor and swap the powerhead.

Well... Humm where do I start.. I thought the extender would work..But they tell me its only to extend the Long shaft only.. I measured the distance from transom rest point to the BIG blade and got the following inches. 1. The extender kit is 5 inches 2. the short shaft body is 17inches 3. the long shaft motor is 22inches. So I thought well.. take the Lower Unit of the Long Shaft motor and install it on the good motor after just installing the 5 inch extension. They are telling me it wont work.. I asked Tohatsu why? They just say its for extending Long shafts to XL shafts only... LOL

If your old 5B has a worn out power head, the easier way is to swap power heads. The Short motor does not have the bushing inside the driveshaft housing (to dampen the driveshaft from whipping). Yes, the dimensions will probably be OK if you extend the S motor to L using the extension housing, but you may get a motor that vibrates like crazy. The proper way to convert S to L is by using the L driveshaft housing (with the bushing).

Right... So, you can still get the kit from internetoutboards.com to convert a short to long.

I don't know how to make it any clearer. You go to internetoutboards.com and buy the kit. Then you install the parts. I understood from your posts that you did not know what to buy or that you were confused. Did you have another question?
