I thought so too cuz LI is on the fringe of their range but the beachcombers who frequent the area I take the dog to run said they have spotted snowies frequently for two or three seasons now. I saw one about ten years ago and haven't seen another until this week. They are much larger than I imagined and even intimidated my 120 lb lab. We also have bald eagles nesting nearby for the first time in decades. Hope they leave a few fish for me. Our seal population is growing and is putting a real dent in the biomass each season too.

Re: New neighbor

Fringe of their range??? Got them all over up here in VT but the main diet up here seems to be mice and squirrels....... not to be confused with moose and squirrel :D

They are breathtaking to see in the woods.

Re: New neighbor

For me watching the birds feed on water or land is enjoyable. Just as long as they don't try to snag my bait when casting. :blue: I caught a gull that came out of nowhere a few years ago! Unappreciative fellow didn't help out with unhooking his claw one iota.

The southern fringe of their range, according to the internet reading I did recently after spotting, is the Long Island Sound. They adapt to the local food source too. Owls near the Great Lakes both fish and hunt ( like me! ). Their favorite is lemmings?

Ironically,
I think the first snowie I saw was at the Vermont Raptor Center when I first was dating my wife and we stayed up by you.

Very nice shot indeed! He's got that "I'm a better hunter than you" look too. :)

It seems he brought some friends down here that picked a poor area to winter.

PA: Owls struck 5 planes at area airports

December 10, 2013 BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says that over the past two weeks five planes at JFK, Newark Liberty and LaGuardia airports have been struck by snowy owls.

The agency released a statement Monday saying it is working with the state Department of Environmental Conservation to immediately implement a program to trap and relocate snowy owls that pose a threat to aircraft.

An unusual number of snowy owls have been spotted in the northern U.S. this year and have been setting up winter residence at airports, fields and beaches far south of their normal range.

Bird strikes over New York have been getting special attention since 2009, when a flight successfully ditched in the Hudson River after hitting a flock of geese.

In that case I would have used the gull to catch an even bigger fishy!
