I HAVE BEEN PRICING MOTORS LOCALLY AND ON THE NET.I HAVE FOUND A PLACE THAT I CAN SAVE FROM $1500 TO $1700 BUT I WOULD HAVE TO DRIVE 5 HOURS TO P/U THE MOTOR (OHH BUT WHAT A NICE RIDE IT WOULD BE ) . MY ? IS IF I P/U THE MOTOR AND RIG IT MYSELF DOES IT NEED TO BE ADJUSTED BEFORE RUNNING OR IS IT SET UP AT THE FACTORY (CARBS) ETC.
SECONDLY HOW ABOUT A 20 HOUR INSPECTION , HOW WOULD YOU WRENCHES FEEL WORKING ON A MOTOR THAT WAS PURCHASED ELSEWHERE AND WOULD THE WARRENTY BE GOOD AT ANY DEALER THAT SOLD THE MAKE I BUY ??? OR WOULD I RUN INTO PROBLEMS WITH A MECH THAT WAS SORE I BOUGHT ELSEWHERE THANKS FOR THE INPUT

Re: NEW MOTOR RIGGING ?????

I've done what you're asking and I'm doing it again in May with two more new Yamaha's. These will be fuel injected and 4-stroke so even less chance of needing adjustments. Lifting them to mount them is more of a concern.

My experience has been bolt them on, rig the controls and go fish'n. No carb/engine adjustments necessary. Any authorized dealer must do the warranty work. The 20 day inspection is probably a dealer free-be in most cases, but nothing you can't do yourself.

You can call the company's customer service 1-800 number for the rigging specs and dimensions. Yamaha faxed them right to me no questions.

Congrats on saving some cash for bait.

Re: NEW MOTOR RIGGING ?????

unless it is mechanical problems with your force. And need a new motor. You said you were going with a 90 hp? Doesn't seem right to me to drive 5 hours for 5 extra horses? Does your force not work anymore?

~Chris

Re: NEW MOTOR RIGGING ?????

WHAT? LETS SEE FOR ONE YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT A MAJOR PURCHASE HERE .YOU ARE WILLINGS TO GAMBLE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS ON THE FACT YOU MAY BE ABLE TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO HOOK UP THIS MOTOR AND BE SURE EVERYTHING IS SET UP RIGHT.DO YOU KNOW IF YOU ARE WRONG THAT WARRANTY WILL NOT COVER ANY PROBLEMS CAUSED BY RIGGING,WHICH COULD BE ANYTHING FROM A BROKE LINKAGE TO A FRIED LOWER UNIT OR POWERHEAD.IF YOU ARE WILLING TO DO THIS WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO SAVE MONEY YOU MUST HAVE MORE THAN YOU NEED SINCE YOU ARE WILLING TO GAMBLE WITH SO MUCH OF IT.AND THE 20 HOUR SERVICE THE ONLY WAY IT WILL BE FREE IS IF YOU DRIVE BACK TO THE DEALER YOU BOUGHT IT FROM AND EVEN THEN IF HE IS GIVING AS GOOD A DEAL AS YOU SAY I AM SURE HE IS NOT GOING TO GIVE ANY EXTRAS.BUT I GARUNTEE THAT A DEALER THAT DID NOT SELL YOU THE MOTOR WILL NOT DO IT FOR FREE,IF AT ALL MOST PROBABLY WILL DO IT FOR A CHARGE BUT EVEN THEN WILL BE IN NO HURRY TO DO IT FOR YOU.YES ANY DEALER FOR THE MOTOR BRAND YOU PURCHASE HAS GOT TO UPHOLD THE WARRABTY ON IT BUT YOU CAN ALSO BET IT WILL BE PUT AT THE BACK OF THE LINE AND DONE WHEN ALL OF HIS CUSTOMERS THAT EITHER BOUGHT FROM HIM OR DO BUSINESS WITH HIM REGULARLY AND NOT BEFORE WHICH COULD BE SEVERAL MONTHS DURING THE SEASON.ANOTHER THING ARE YOU COMPARING APPLES TO APPLES I DON'T SEE ONE DEALER BEING THAT MUCH HIGHER THAN ANOTHER ON A SINGLE ENGINE PURCHASE IN THAT HORSE POWER RANGE.I HAVE RIGGED ALOT OF MOTORS IN MY CAREER AND I CAN ASSURE YOU IT IS NOT AS CUT AND DRY AS THE PREVIOUS POST HAVE IMPLIED .HEY IT IS YOUR MONEY BUT IF IT WERE ME I WOULD GO BUY $6000.00 WORTH OF LOTTO TICKETS ATLEAST YOU MIGHT GET SOME MONEY BACK AFTER YOU GET SCREWED.SORRY IF I SOUND A LITTLE RUDE ABOUT THIS BUT I JUST WANT TO BE SURE YOU GET MY POINT!

Re: NEW MOTOR RIGGING ?????

NOW FOR THE MY POSITIVE SIDE. IF YOU BUY FROPM A LOCAL REPUTABLE DEALER HE WILL IN MOST CASES DO WHAT EVER HE CAN TO KEEP HIS CUSTOMERS HAPPY,YOU WILL GET A BOAT BACK WITH A NEW MOTOR ON IT THAT WOULD RUN AND PERFORM PROPERLY,THERE WOULD BE NO HIDDEN COST,AND WHEN IT BROKE ON YOU IN JULY HE WOULD BE HAPPY TO DO ALL HE COULD TO PUT YOU BACK ON THE WATER ASAP.AND THE REPAIRS WOULD BE COVERED BY WARRANTY ,HE WOULD EVEN FIGHT WITH THE MANUFACTURER FOR YOU WHEN THEY TRY AND WEASIL OUT OF PAYING FOR REPAIRS THEY SHOULD BE PAYING FOR.IN SHORT THERE ARE A LOT MORE REASONS FOR BUYING LOCAL THEN YOU WILL EVER FIND FOR BUYING 5 HOURS DOWN THE ROAD.REMEMBER THE OLD SAYING "IF A PRICE SOUNDS TO GOOD TO BE TRUE IT USUALLY IS" SAVE YOURSELF A LOT OF HEADACHES AND GET OFF THE CASH.

Re: NEW MOTOR RIGGING ?????

If its only a 5 hour drive, why not drag the boat and have the selling dealer install, warrenty, etc. for you? Is your local dealer unable or just unwilling to give you a turnkey deal that would keep you local?CAPTBLACK is right about selling service but just how much over retail should we pay and not feel ripped?

Re: NEW MOTOR RIGGING ?????

I priced the motor at eds marine in VA. ,$4500 @ 2% sales tax for the 90 hp johnson my local dealer wants $6100 at 6% tax and anywhere between $750 to $1000 to rig motor and new controlls . I fully understand your point on trusting my ability to set up this motor and the odds it bites me in the seat in the long run. And i welcome all responses whatever they are thats why I'm here . i'f i wanted only positive things only i'd just look it the mirror and talk to myself because we all think our choices arre right or we wouldn't amke them . What else does the set up invove that we haven't talked about ??

Re: NEW MOTOR RIGGING ?????

Since you are changing motor brands, in addition to the motor you will need:

correct prop for your application
oil tank kit
control box
boat wiring harness
guages, including System Check gauge or tach with warning lites
correct length throttle and shift cables
template for drilling transom mount holes
heavy duty marine battery
possibly new steering system if not ABYC standard

Re: NEW MOTOR RIGGING ?????

YOU DID NOT MENTION WHEATHER OR NOT THESE ENGINES WERE THE SAME YEAR MODEL.OR WHEATHER THEY ARE BOTH 60 DEGREE LOOPER ENGINES OR 90 DEGREE CROSSFLOW ENGINES.IF ONE OF THEM IS A CROSSFLOW AND THE OTHER IS NOT THEN THERE IS ALOT OF YOUR PRICE DIFFERENCE .ARE THEY BOTH OIL INJECTED?IF NOT THIS IS SOME MORE OF THE DIFFERENCE.IF THE GUY WITH THE GREAT PRICE DID NOT SPECIFY THE YEAR AND STYLE OF THE MOTOR I WOULD BE ASKING AND PROBABLY GET HIM TO FAX YOU SOMETHING WITH SPECIFICS ABOUT THE MOTOR HE IS PRICING YOU.OF COURSE I WOULD PROBABLY ASK FOR THIS FROM BOTH DEALERS . BUT MORE SO THE CHEAPER ONE ATLEAST THE LOCAL ONE YOUR NOT DRIVING 5 HOURS TO FIND OUT HE WASN'T 100% HONEST ABOUT WHAT HE WAS SELLING YOU.THE CHEAPER DEALER MAY BE AS HONEST AS ANYONE BUT I HAVE SEEN THERSE TYPES OF SALE TACTICS NUMEROUS TIMES WHERE THEY JUST GIVE YOU A GREAT PRICE AND TELL YOU NOTHING MORE UNTIL THEY GET YOU IN THE DOOR AND THEN HEY YOU DROVE 5 HOURS TO GET THERE THEY WILL PROBABLY SELL YOU SOMETHING BEFORE YOU LEAVE AND MOST OF THE TIME IT WINDS UP NOT BE MUCH SAVINGS AT ALL IF ANY.BUT YES IF THEY ARE BOTH IDENTICAL ENGINES AND THERE IS $1600.00 DIFFERENCE IN PRICE THEN BUY IT FROM OUT OF TOWN .THOUGH I WOULD DO AS THE PREVIOUS POST SUGGEST AND TAKE IT TO THEM TO BE INSTALLED AND SET UP,AND I WOULD BE PREPARED TO GO BACK TO HIM FOR MY WARRANTY AND SERVICE NEEDS.AND IF there is still that much difference sit down with the owner of your local dealer ship and ask him why you should pay his price what makes it worth it for you?at any rate i would do some more investigating before i spent my money.

Re: NEW MOTOR RIGGING ?????

We sell Merc and soon will be selling Johnson at my dealership. There is lots of competition in the area so many of the people that boat in our immediate area end up choosing to buy elsewhere. We are happy to take care of these customers as well as all of our other service customers. We do however make an extra effort for the customers who have purchased their motors from us. I don't begrudge anybody for shopping around to save a buck. We all work hadr for our money so we need to make it go as far as possible. BUT, given the economics of outboard motor sales it makes no sense that one dealer should be able to sell a new current model outboard for that much less than another, that it would be worth driving 5 hours for. For example with Mercury (in Canada at least) the difference in dealer cost between the highest and lowest volume dealers is only 3%. I can assure you also that the markup on motors is disgracefully low so there is little to play with there. Usually if someone is offering a really cheap price it is on non-current stock that they need to get rid of, or reposessed stock from a bankrupt dealer or so called factory demo motors (which are really just used motors). Unless the guy with the good deal 5 hours away was fortunate enough to buy his motors way below regular dealer cost you should be able to sit down with your local delaer and get just as good a price. It's worth asking.
