New Motor Pod/Transom - Help Finding One

I am looking for a new motor pod for my pontoon. I have a 24ft Monarch with large toons, I think they are 26(can't remember exact). I have had two different motor types on my toon, and I am putting a brand new Mercury on this winter/sprin. The transom already has extra holes...and so I want to replace it. My toon is rate for up to either a 125 or a 150 (again can't remember exact) so the new one I find needs to be strong. I have tried looking except for Ebay for a new one. The one place I did find was somewhere in the range of 450.00. Is that normal? Seems way over priced, granted its for a toon so of course its expensive. If anyone can't point me in a good direction I would appreciate it.

I have nothing to base it on, but off the top of my head $450 sounds fair. You might try calling other manufacturers who produce 26" toons, but I'd be surprised if they could direct you toward anything cheaper.

For $450 you should be able to find a local metal fabrication shop that would make you a new one. Unless there is something very special about this pod, it is simply bent sheet aluminum. Any wood used in the motor mount is as close as your local lumber supplier.

The price actually seems right on, I assume it is 3/16 and you would need a 4'x6' at sheet to do a pod, between the cost of aluminum, breaking the part and welding that is actually pretty reasonable.

All you can really do is call dealers of different boats and see if they can sell you one and what it will cost.

They should all be pretty much the same and if you got it undrilled it should fit easy btu I think it is gonna cost right in that neighborhood.

If you have an aluminum backboard just find a local welder to fill the holes for you, it would be alot less then 450.

I'm curious why you would want to replace the transom because of extra holes. If you aren't going beyond the max hp for that boat, you should not need a new transom.

Sounds like he's just taking the better safe than sorry approach with his new power plant. Can't blame him for that. However, Samm, you might consider trying this. Take your rig to a good aluminmum welder and tell him your plans, then ask him whether you need to replace the pod. Don't assume he'll say yes just so he can do the work. Those guys are out there, but most welders with their own shop have enough work that they don't feel compelled to shaft people, at least not over a motor pod. Any way, I digress. If he thinks a rebuild or replace is in order ask his (or her) opinion on how to proceed. Ask him what it would cost to have one made. You'll most likely find your best bet will be the prefab pod, but there's no harm in asking since your rig will be right there in front of him, and while you're there you can discuss having it mounted. Multi-task man, multi-task!;) Keep us posted. I'm jealous of your new Merc. How many horseys by the way?

Did you buy your brand new Merc locally?
Seems that would be the place to get the new transom.
Or they would at least be able to point you towards a fab shop that has done such things in the past and has some experience.

As stated, you could have the old holes welded up.
Or have just a new transom plate welded in and the rest of the pod reinforced if needed.

Incoop has a great suggestion. Check with your local welding shop about beefing up what you have if you feel it is necessary. Should be cheaper than a new one.

After reading all the suggestions and looking at the cost, I think I have decided to go with having the holes welded and also putting a new plate over and bolting to the existing pod for double security. The motor wasn't bought at a dealer, I actually bought it from a guy who is in bad financial situation and he had just purchased the motor this past spring. The motor has under 15hrs of use. Its amazing the cost of this pod, something so small and fairly simple cost so freakin much. Again like most things on a boat....its gotta be expensive, but oh well I love my toon. Thanks for the help guys, you guys have a great holiday!

That ought to do it. Be sure and have them look all over for stress cracks, etc. while they're at it. And when it's done don't leave us guessing. Pics are mandatory!:) Good luck.
