I'll be picking up my Merc 20hp 4-stroke tomorrow. Are there any break-in tips that other's have used? Is it like a car engine where I should avoid constant speeds? Should I change the oil on the engine or the lower unit after a certain number of hours?

Any advice appreciated.

Its best to follow the guidlines of the maker............for sure change the break in oil and filter to get the metal out............never race the engine in any way in neutral nor let it idle for long periods............I don't think constant speeds will hurt anything ........just keep it somewhat under full throttle and make the engine pull............down throttle slowly unless you have no choice..............all in all put it to the test at different levels of power to know you have a good engine..........You can change the lower unit oil to be sure there is no water and check the plug to get any metal off................The more you know about your engine the better off you will be in the long or short run............ Always use good quality clean fuel.........Always watch for oil or fuel seepage and check for loose screws , bolts, fittings all over............. good luck...........

Yep just stay close to the Tohatsu guidlines on breakin and you will be ok...........and three tanks is about right for the breakin hours.........it don't take that long then you can let her rip.........

Make sure when you are out boating you have plug wrench screw drivers and such along with extra shear pins for the prop............it beats having to paddle if a problem turns up.................
