Has anyone tried one of these yet? I've noticed many of the new spinning reels have ridges on the spool, what's the function?

Re: New Mitchell 300 X

Jellwanger, I really don't know how many Mitchell reels I have, [over a dozen], Most of them are the old garcia-mitchells. Use them all the time.

Several years ago I bought a "new" 300 for my wife along with A 7' medium action rod. The first thing I noticed was it was made in China, not France, as all the good ones were.

I had to "overhaul" this reel on three different occasions before I rebuilt an old model for her. Ever work on a reel onboard? It's not really much fun. This new 300 went by way of a yard sale.

My advice, go to a yard sale or swap meet and buy one that says made in France. If you need parts or service on it send it to me and I'd be happy to tune it up for you. No charge, only the cost of parts,[I get them wholesale], and postage.

This is really one case where "new & improved" is BS>

Happy fishing, Hal
E-Mail harrison20002@yahoo.com

Re: New Mitchell 300 X

JE,

Went to the big Sportsmans show in Harrisburg, PA last weekend and the 300 was on my list of MUST SEE.

Well we were having lunch at a big table with a lot of people. A guy had an older but brand new Mitchell.

I asked if he saw the new 300, he said he had several Mitchells including this new/old one and that this was the only way he would buy another. He said the new Mitchell 300 was junk and very cheaply made! I didn't even take the time to look for one.

As for the ridges I assume mfgs are using thinner materials and the ridges give it more strength. Kind of like a metal boat the creases give them strength. I have reels with them.
;)

I've got an old one (about 30 years old?) and was all excited to buy the new 300X out of Cabela's, but now I'm not so sure... :(

Re: New Mitchell 300 X

We had an earlier thread going about 308's, my favorite. Garcia-Mitchell were family favorites. My current reel has got to be older than me (40). Got lucky last summer and finally found one among the thousands of Pfluger level winds at big antique show. It had the ceramic high capacity spool with both metric and english meas. on it and is in perfect condition. Cost me $22.00, I think. He was selling one on E-Bay new in the box for $35.00. That's too bad about the new reels, but if its made in China, its not going in my box! Who's got the quality merchandise out there now? I've always been partial to Shakespear as well.

Re: New Mitchell 300 X

What? Don't know I guess it's a matter of opinion, I was weined on Penn, I have an old one (30 to 40 years), was my Grandfather's. It along with a shakespere were left to me. Both old but in great shape! Both used often.

I like the new Penns as well, they may not be as "high tech" as some but that can be a good thing. New tech doesn't always mean better tech. Penns are just about bullet proof as they come.

My wife's a good angler but gets bored sometimes. She could care less about "high tech" she likes the clear cut ease of use of the Penns. Penn must be doing something right, they have been around since the week after dirt was invented and still going strong.

I also have three newer Abbu Garcia's, one I got just in 2000, they are all towards the upper price scale. I think they are great, I like them very much, both spinners and baitcast. One baitcast I put on a real nice St, Croix and it is one of, if not my favorite right now. Maybe becsause I caught several nice walleye last year on it. Just kidding I really like it!

Last year at a year end sale I bought a Daiwa spinner about middle of the road on price. Only got to use it once but it seems very strong with one of the smoothest actions I've used. I'll know better this year, I'm looking forward to using it. When I cast it at the screen while watching fishing shows I can't seem to get a bite. Hope I didn't waste my money :)

Just one man's 2 cents worth

Re: New Mitchell 300 X

Hey all,

Got really lucky today, once in a while I go to this small town nearby and they have what they call an "Antique Mall" since there's a lot of fishin and huntin round here there’s usually a lot of related stuff at the "Mall".

Today I picked up a brand new in the box with extra spool a 1959 Mitchell 300. The thing still has the white grease packed around the shaft from the factory (a little dried out) but not a spec of dirt. Mint condition, never used and it Works perfect!!!

This guy had a tackle shop at one time and tells me he's got several Mitchells many of the 300 series and other brands some I've never heard of. He's going to bring a box full next week and I'm going to see what I can pick cheap.

Any suggestions from you all what I should be looking for I've started a list of some reels I have in mind, let me know what you think would be good to pick up.

I know you all are wondering what I paid for the 300 - 15 bux I bet it was more than that in 1959.

Don't forget your suggestions ;)

Re: New Mitchell 300 X

I've owned the "old" Mitchell 300, although I know nothing about the new one, it wouldn't take much to improve upon the old one....what a piece of cr##. Invest in plenty of bail springs!! :p

Penn's are very tough and reliable. Okuma's are a good value also.

Re: New Mitchell 300 X

RJS & CaptU; Amen on the Penn reels. Between my wife and I we have 5. My favorite is an old level wind P-9. I use it on my trout trolling rod.I only have to keep it clean and use it.

As for the garcia-Mitchells I rarely have any trouble with them. They get a lick and promise cleaning a couple times a year and get completly torn apart and cleaned each Winter. In the last two years I've had to replace 2 bail springs but the beating my grandkids give them I thought that was pretty good.

Happy Fishing, Guys :D Hal :D

All,

They'll have to take my old 300's and 308's from my cold dead fingers. Fragile bail springs and all.

Re: New Mitchell 300 X

Amen to that djohns. i have all of my grandpas 300 and 308s. i also get them from pepole that don't clean them for years and when the greese gets hard and stops the anti revrese from working they give there proublems to me. I always say " well i guess i could use the parts." and sneek away telling the little man on my shoulder to shut the h### up and quit kicking me. got about 20 of em. some are parts reels. don't like the ones with the plastic anti rev. though. is there a reel that has a metal one that i can transplant without a proublem? Derwood. ;)
