I need some help please. This is the only thing keeping me out of the water right now.

I put in a new tilt/trim pump and 3-button harness in an 81 Welcraft V20.

The tilt and trim was working ok after the new pump was installed, though it would move up and down super slow, painfully slow.

Now that I lowered it all the way down, it will not come back up? It was going up and down before

The buttons work and the pump runs, but the outdrive does not move. While experimentating before it was all the way down, I noticed that it would still lower, but will not go up.

It was going up and down before.

if the pump is running it sounds like you dont have all the air out of it yet

you may have to help the drive up while someone runs the pump after a few times it should purge all the air out

dont let the tank get low on oil or you will have to start over

tommays

Re: New Mercruiser Tilt Problem

I did put a bunch of oil in it before I used it the first time. I am guessing without looking at the bottle, maybe 1/2 a quart. How much oil should it take?

There is a VENT screw on the pump not far from the fill hole on top of the reservoir. Should I fill till it pours out the vent hole?

Is it possible to overfill?

I kind of ran thru this already working the drive up and down to work the air out, though I never went all the way down. If it is not the issue, where should I look next?

Would this also cause the drive to raise and lower so slowly?

Thanks you in advance. I really apprecaite the advice.

if its not air and its a brand new pump then a cylinder could be leaking internaly

but air and a low oil tank whould be my first guess

tommays

What about battery?

Could it be a battery issue? If the battery was losing charge would that effect the speed it went up and down, even if the trim pump sounded like it was running strong?

Is is possible to overfill the fluid? Can I open the vent and pour fluid in till it come out the vent, then close and try it?

sounds llike it might be air bound,to bleed:remove rear pivot pin, allow rams to hang down, cycle rams, check oil level, cycle rams.leave cap off pump in case you put in too much oil.

just by running the pump as i said before you may have to HELP the drive move the first cycle

or if there is a lot of air you may need to crack the fittings open on the rams to allow some air out like bleeding brakes

all of this assumes that you are pumping oil !!!!

tommays
