I'm looking to swap out my 1999 Johnson 130 H.P. for a Merc 115 4 stroke. I was wondering if anyone had any pros or cons about this motor. Also, if you think I may be unhappy with performance compared to my 130 johnson. I have the motor on a 17 ft. crestliner [aluminum]. Any input would be appreciated. Also, I live in S.E. WI. if anyone knows of a reputable dealer in area.

Re: new merc 115 4 stroke

Corby,
I'm considering the same engine and asked this question yesterday in another string (sorry for the long message):

p_maher
New Member posted May 22, 2001 05:20 PM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Working out numbers on a new boat and asked dealer to price out boat with 115 4stk Yamaha. He's pushing the Merc 115. He says they are the same. Dry weight not the same, the Yamaha is 32 lbs heavier. I've heard they are the same powerhead. True? One any
"better" than the other.
Thanks,
Pat

IP: Logged

J.B. Cornwell
Member posted May 22, 2001 06:29 PM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Howdy, Pat. Yamaha makes a big deal out of being the lightest in each power class. Their 115 EFI weighs 398 lb.
If the Merc is a 1741 cc, sixteen valve inline four it could theoretically be the same power head. If it is, and weighs 366 lb, it must not be fuel injected.

I had heard, second hand, a claim by a Merc seller that their 4 stroke 90 is the same engine as the Yammy 100. Neither is EFI.

I could be wrong, but I don't believe either claim is accurate.

I just bought a Suzuki DF70 EFI and I can tell you the EFI is worth many extra bux on any 4 stroke for the same reasons that you can't buy carbureted cars any more.

I would put the Yammy 115 EFI and the Suzi 115 EFI well ahead of any other 4 strokes in that class. If the Merc is truly a match I would be surprized.

I've been wrong before. . . .let's see, was that '53 or '55? . . . . um, well, check the details. I think you're getting smoked.

Good luck.
JB

IP: Logged

p_maher
New Member posted May 23, 2001 11:35 AM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
J.B.,
Thanks for the info. According to the Feb. 2001 Powerboat Reports, the Yam and Merc *do* share the powerhead. Merc adds it's own lower unit.
So, I'm thinking, if same warranty, I can live with the Merc.
Pat

IP: Logged

mbb
New Member posted May 23, 2001 09:24 PM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yamaha makes the powerhead for mercury, I dont know that its exactly the same though.
Honda lower units are made by merc, and internal parts are identical to certain merc lower units and mucho cheaper from merc dealer.

I can tell you from a techs experiance that yamaha's quality controll for out of the box performance is excellant. I am very partial to mercs, but i must say, as far as the four strokes go Yammys are 95% of the time turn key out of the box. They have a very successfull fuel filtration system for those extremely sensative carbs!

Re: new merc 115 4 stroke

Howdy, guys. Well it is clear that I was wrong about the origin of the powerheads on the Merc 4 strokes.

It is still unclear to me whether the Merc 115 4 stroke is fuel injected, like the Yammy version, or carbureted. If it is EFI, then it should be an equivalent performer to the Yammy and I apologize to all, including Mercury. If it is carbureted it should not be considered an equivalent engine.

Tight lines.
JB
