Uh...I'd buy that sucker in a cocaine heartbeat! Shoot...I paid $6300 in 1988 for a new 1987 Merc 200.

As for personal experience with the 225 Offshore?? I have none...but I sure wouldn't hesitate to buy it if that was the HP range I was interested in. You've found yourself one heck of a deal there sir...

Walt

Merc has a service bulletin that advises that the water pump impeller and lower unit oil be changed on new motors that have sat for 3 (I think) years or more. I'm sorry I don't know the bulletin number but the dealer should perform this work for you (at least the impeller). Also, make sure that the warranty will be registered. We had one customer that bought a three or four year old non-current from a dealer that wasn't selling Merc anymore. The dealer was not able to register the motor which led to a big hassle when it required repair.

Just a word to the wise. Sounds like a great deal.

I've learned my lesson the hard way many times......'good' deals DO exist....'great' deals or 'steals' DONT. Make sure you know who is selling you this motor. I would have it looked at...'in the box' can mean many things. For that price you are in the range where the police tell you that "you should have known by the price". Just be carefull and know who you are dealing with.

I'm with purse snatcher. Good deals do exist. Sometimes you can find a great deal. Is it a reputable business or somebody's back warehouse? Sounds like a decent price, but I haven't priced mercs. But, deals can be found. For example, I recently bought an in box 2000 OMC carb 200 HP, new controls and rigged for 7500. Bad part is that the dealer is out of business now. But plenty of OMC mechs around. It can be kina hard to pull the trigger when you have doubts about quality or ownership. Sometimes you just gotta jump. Again thanks to Dunk, 12 footer, schematic and all that helped.
