BBC are carrying this story: here

A new jet engine design able to fly seven times the speed of sound is scheduled to launch over Australia on Friday.

The Hyshot tests will bring the idea of a commercial scramjet one step closer to reality.

In the first instance these would probably be used to launch satellites into low earth orbit but many have speculated that they could also allow passenger airlines to fly between London and Sydney in just 2 hours.

Although this vision maybe many years off, it was given a huge boost when Nasa successfully flew its X-43A plane over the Pacific Ocean in 2004. The unmanned aircraft flew at 10 times the speed of sound, a new world speed record.

Sounds pretty interesting. Anyone know anything about it?

In the US super sonic flight over the country was prohibited do to the damages and annoyance of the sonic booms. I would think at Mach 10 a few window are going to blow up.

yep, unless you live in my area, then sonic booms are a daily event.
few years back an airforce F16 buzzed and boomed the fishing fleet heading out of oregon inlet at about 350 ft. some eardrums were ruptured most cabin widows shattered and some flyglass injuries resulted,
the airforce denied everything.
until the dreaded home video showed up. dang pesky video folks.
was quietly and quickly hushed with taxpayer compensation for all :) .
its the american way.
the video not only showed what aircraft but the squadron and call letters on the aircraft :) was funny to watch how fast the lance armstrong school of backpeddling went into motion.

yep used to be that way here.
most folk about here dont realize we live within 50 miles of an active bombing range used by the airforce, navy, marines and USCG for various training issues nor do most realize that Duck north carolina, now a high dollar resort, used to be an active bombing/warship target range and we still recover unexploded ordanace after storms. nor do the realize that in the 1950's cape hatterass was scheduled to be a nuclear bomb test site until some wise general saw our wind patterns were to unpredictable and convinced the army that it may not be a good idea.
funny how history works and is forgotten.

15 mnute ride from my house, mostly A-10's and F-16's, lots of bomb blasts and 50-caliber noise audible from my house, but I haven't heard any sonic booms.

stiff nibbles, isnt that someplace near the school the air national guard strafed not long ago?
sometimes the sonics actually make my widows flex and occasionally, if I left them close to the edge, things fall off the counter.
I dont think they are supposed to but occasionally the squadron will throttle up when crossing the island headed east.

I remember the F-16 incident in Oregon. The airplane was actually a Navy F-16 used to simulate enemy aircraft for training exercises. It actually lifted the the engine hatch of one boat and bow hatches on another from the shock wave it was creating.
