Wanted to check if other folks are having this problem. Brand new - 30 days old - Honda BF5, first 3X I used the motor, it ran flawlessly.

4th time - it started, ran for 15 min, then I shut it down. Restarted - turned over fine, but ran very rough, coughed and stalled at low RPM (when throttle is between "start" and "low" setting). Pulling the choke out somewhat helps, but the engine RPM's will surge.

Have it in the shop for 1 month adjustments, and for the stalling/surging problem. Wondering if others have seen this happen.

What makes this story funny is that I purchased this motor to replace a 1970 Johnson Seahorse with persistent starting problems. I kept the Johnson, have been fiddling around with it an figured our why I had the starting problems in the first place (bad coils - possibly getting new ones to fit and test this weekend)

Now I have 2 motors - one 34 years old that will likely fire up and run well, the 34 day old motor that starts, but won't idle.

Thanks much.

These engines need to idle to spec or they will give you the symptoms you describe over time. What are you useing this engine on ?Did that dealer you bought it from do a tank test and walk thru pre delivery with you ? How old is the fuel we,re expecting this girl to drink? Is it still mix?A fuel sample from your tank could tell you a lot.
