Morning All,

Been browsing around here since I got my boat about a month back. Seems every time I google something about the boat I get directed to a thread here about it, so I decided to join.

It sounds like the issues I'm having with my motor/boat are fairly common to this setup and I've seen some good tips and tricks for remedying them.

Currently the issues I'm having are as follows:

Leaky rivets and/or seams near the front of the boat. I haven't taken it out strictly on a leak hunt yet but plan to soon and try to work on them. From what I've seen here and elsewhere the best long term solution is to re-rivet. I also plan to try to seal along the seams while I'm doing this in hopes of prolonging doing it again. Any product recommendations?

Next issue is my Johnson 9.9 fouling plugs. I mainly troll and after about 20 hrs the engine died on me. I was given plugs by the previous owner and advised that "it happens with this type of motor" changed them out and she fired right back up. I want to ensure my thermostat is still in place on this motor and functioning but can't seem to find a clear picture of where the thermostat is. Does anyone have one or a diagram they can post up showing this? I'm mechanically inclined but am a complete rookie when it comes to outboards. I also am now running NGK B6HS as this seems to be the recommended plug for this issue. I've been browsing around the Leroysramblings site as well getting some good info. I plan to do a decarb using seafoam here soon too as the engine is new to me and I'm not sure its ever been done.

Other than these two issues I'm enjoying the "new" boat (new even though its older than I am!) and have doing pretty good landing some eyes in my local lake. I'm also enjoying learning about the motor and the boat from the forum members here. Thanks for all the help so far and thanks in advance for any forthcoming.

The only 'sealant' that might work as a temp solution might be Sicaflex, but a hell to get rid of later!!
Use Champion (Q)L77JC4 spark plugs on that engine. To change thermostat, you need to remove the cover at the back of the head, but might be a bit tricky. Remove the screw holding the lower cover latch and the latch first.
At the same time doing the thermostat, do the impeller as well if older than 3 years!!
Here the diagram showing the thermostat:
