Just wanted to tell all that I appreciate the help. Even though I did not speak to anybody directly. The abundance of information on this site helped a great deal. I am by no means a mechanic but the instructions and information I found while searching was / is a great help. I have a 95 bayliner capri ss 1850 w/ 3.0 merc , alpha one, first boat I've owned, Ive had it for 3yrs now. I was going to sell the boat this summer because I am just swamped with work and it wasnt looking like I would really have much time to enjoy the lake this year. I hated to just let it sit. Any ways I had a buyer interested and they had a mechanic go thru the boat. He said the gimble bearing was going bad, ( I always wondered what that noise was) and it was going to cost $750-$1500. Naturally the buyer was thinking worst case and wanted me to come off $1500 on the asking price, I already came off $700 prior to his mechanic going thru the whole boat. I told him I wasn't coming down that much. I really didn't want to get rid of the boat that bad anyway. I felt pretty bad too because the wife had those sad eyes when I pulled out of the drive way with the boat in tow to meet the buyer.
I ended up not selling the boat. I came home and started looking up gimble bearings and how to's and I kept getting directed to this site. After reading numerous posts, I ended up going for it and changed all the bellows, lower shift cable, and gimble bearing, was going to change the U-joints too but after cleaning them off they were still in real good shape.
I am taking the boat to the lake hopefully tomorrow for a trial run to make sure the shift cable is adjusted correctly and she doesnt stall on me. Passed the tests in gear turning to port and starboard.. no noises and all seems to be working good. New bearing sound great.
I have a couple more issues I am looking to straighten out here soon. Tach bounces all over the place and speedometer works every now and then. I have read a few posts here on these issues and will pursue them probably this winter. Any ways..... thanks again, for the help!:D
