I haven't posted for a while. I have a '70 mercury 500 50 hp. the remote control wasn't working very well especially on the shift side. It's pretty worn out. For those of you who know what they look like inside, there's a wheel with a tooth or tang in it that meshes with an oblong oval shaped piece of metal that hooks to the cable to shift. The tooth and especially the groove that it fits in is worn out. Do any of you guys know where I might get new parts for the inside of this remote control? I also intend to install new cables as well because I think that's what caused this problem in the first place, so if you have any suggestions about where to get cables that would help too. I wouldn't be opposed to putting in some sort of universal remote control(if there is such a thing) because my ignition switch went bad and I had to mount it and the choke button in the dash anyway. Sorry for being long.

Hey NMplayer,
Check out ebay. Controls show up there quite often and affordable, too. They aren't worth rebuilding...never gets right again. Go to ebay, then ebaymotors, then Parts/Accessories, then Boats/motors. Good luck.\
Las Cruces born.

Re: new guts for old merc remote control

Just bought me a new set on E-Bay and I agree with earlier post that it is best to replace whole unit. Some after market units are admittedly better quality, but there are plenty of new old stock orginal Mercs out there on e-Bay.

Hi Player
See that you won the auction!! Not a bad price either. Let us know how it works out when you get it and install it.

Thanks Rick, I'm glad you think the price was alright. I really didn't know what it ought to be worth, but after doing some research on what new aftermarket controls cost ($250-$500) I thought it was fair.

Just as a reference, I bought one for my runabout with a small Johnson around six months ago on E-Bay and I paid $150.00. So yeah, you came out good.
