Hi to all. Looking to repower soon and this link has exactly the same block I need.

http://www.highperformanceparts.net/GM_Engines/12568758.html

Its a truck engine. I plan to run close system on it so the brass freeze plugs, water pump and the gaskets are not an issue. I plan to change the camshaft if it makes a big difference in power. Cost is $1800.00 for new and not rebuilt.

Im looking for any feedback as to what performance and longevity should I expect out of this repower. Thanks.

Should be OK if you go ahead and change out the camshaft to a marine version, and use all other marine external components.

Ok. So if I do not replace the camshaft and leave the original one, will I see a huge loss in power? Will the engine last the same as a "marine long block"? It just seems like the camshaft is the only real difference if you are planning on running FWC. Thanks.

Albe,

The best way to tell is to get the cam profile from the dealer or GM of the engine you're looking at.

Compare that to the cam profile of a MerCruiser/Volvo/OMC marinized engine of the same vintage.

Albe,
your link took me to the lightduty pickup motor... Go with the "over 8500lbs. motor"(1 ton p/u)Part #12520270... it'll already have the "low-end Grunt cam" in it... i Think i'd still add the brass block plugs.. they(steel) Could rust from the outside in... you Could run the waterpump off your motor ?? the head gaskets Should be just fine...
For Your app. this looks like a Great Answer...

Albe,

I agree with bondo on the HD engine. It's as close as you'll get.

I also agree on replacing the casting plugs.

You cannot use an automotive water pump on a raw water cooled marine engine. The impeller blades won't last. As long as you go to a closed cooling system, the automotive pump will work.

Be careful the new GM engines are manufactured in Mexico. There crate engine program has really gone down hill.Ive seen a lot of problems with bearing wear on very low milage engines. You would be better off rebuilding a old 350 then getting a new one,you could go with a jasper or similar remanufacturer if you dont want to rebuild yours.A used block is better then a new block as it is seasoned and should last a very long time on a good rebuild.Good Luck,Jonny

I recommend you get a complete new bobtail marine engine. You should always have a brass freeze plug. The circulation water pump must be marine also. You cannot use an automotive circulation pump. Changing the cam shaft is not needed. There is a lot involved in what you are thinking about. I am just across the line from you in Lillian, Al. Call me and I will help you with what you want to do. 1-800-949-2189. You can come by my business and we can discuss your engine and boat.
