New Fuel Line... Now Boat Won't Run!!

My parents have asked me to come over this evening and help them with a problem with their pontoon boat. Before I do, I thought I'd try to get some input on what I might be looking for when I get there. Here's what I know so far: They noticed a very small leak in the fuel line (from tank to motor w/quick connect fittings on both ends), so they bought a brand new fuel line w/primer bulb. My mother (who is helpless by no means, but has very little experience with boats) decides to put the new hose on herself. She gets it all hooked up, squeezes the bulb several times, turns the key... it won't crank. After a bit of inspection, she realizes that she has neglected the directionality of the primer bulb, and hooked the new hose up backwards. She disconnects the hose and re-installs it correctly, but now it still won't crank. It obviously isn't getting fuel, because it will run on starting fluid, but they can't get it to run off the tank again. It was running fine before the fuel hose change.

I know that it is a late 80's/early 90's model Crestliner pontoon with a 150 outboard. I'm waiting on my step-dad to get back to me with something more specific, in case brand matters here. All the decals are missing from the motor and he's having trouble IDing it.

Thanks in advance for any ideas what might have happened.

Has she pumped the bulb enough to fill the empty fuel line with gas, not sure how much that would be? Is the fitting on the tank side sealing, if sucking air it will never prime. Just a couple thoughts.

It is confusing when you say "it won't Crank" that means that the motor isn't turning over. If it cranks and doesn't start then it is more than likely there isn't getting fuel to the motor yet. You can disconnect the fuel line where it goes into the carburetor and see if it is getting fuel. Like nlain said, if there is a leak and sucking air it will not prime.. Does the bulb get hard after a few pumps?

From what they have told me, it sounds like they have pumped the bulb plenty, but that will be the first thing I will check when I get there. She did say that it took quite a few pumps of the bulb before it got hard after correcting her mistake, so it sounds like she knows what to look for.

@boat1010 - I did say that it will run on starting fluid, hoping to clear up that it is must be a fuel issue; however, just to be perfectly clear: The motor does turn over, and fast enough. I think we can eliminate fire, and concentrate on fuel, because as long as someone is standing at the motor and giving it a puff of starting fluid every few seconds it will run (they did this in hopes that it would pick up fuel again after running for a minute or so).

Make sure the tank vent is open.

Howdy
Just installed a new primer bulb this morning :
It took me 10 full squeezes per foot of hose to get fuel to the motor and how i did it was sooo simple .
I pressed the ball in abit in the quick connect on the engine end of hose ,, installed a small wire to hold it open .
Now squeeze bulb till bit of fuel comes out of engine end in a squirt .
Remove wire and reconnect to engine,, then pump pump pump till bulb gets hard..
Enjoy --- It takes a while to do it right !!
This new Atwood bulb seems not to work until it is filled with fuel then it works fine !!

Ever take a primer bulb apart -- distinct improbability of above statment happening unless it is severely damaged !!
Read OP's post ---New primer bulb !!

I personally won't start the outboard to many times with just starter fluid...anyways
I'd double check to see if the bulb is in the right direction,if it is,I'd sqeeze the thing until gas came out the connector(like mentioned above)then hook it to the outboard.
You never know maybe the new primer bulb is bad,can happen.
You could always put the old hose/bulb back on and see what happens.
