I hear people talking about the EPA prohibiting the use of 2 strokes in the next couple of years. Is this true? Or would it be that the sale of 2 strokes would be prohibited? I am especially interested in the laws in Virginia. I plan on buying a new boat in the next month or so and I am interestred in a outboard 2 stroke. Specifically a Mercury 240 EFI. Thanks, Bert.

I believe that the EPA has set standards for new outboards produced in 2006 which are difficult for classic, carburated two-strokes to meet. The newer injected two-strokes are apparently OK.

Federal emissions standards have allowed old cars to be "grandfathered" and keep rolling after stricter rules were enacted, and that will probably happened with the 2002 outboard two-srokes.

They are not going to prohibit the production
of two strokes. They are going to prohibit the production of any outboard that doesn't
meet their emissions standards(2 stroke or 4
stroke).Right now, I believe, only some of the Ficht, Opti-Max and HPDI 2stroke outboards meet those standards.I've also heard that not all 4strokes meet those standards.Another thing to consider is that
there probably will be places you won't be able to use non-complying engines because some local agency says so.
