Looks like my '75, 115 Johnnie is near wear out mode, low compression on all cylinders and has developed a carb problem. This is the original engine for my Arrow Glass Cheetah, which I have just finished a restore. I like the boat and the engine, for that matter. The engine has never let me down and has run well up until a few weeks ago. Understand a power head overhaul is around $1,500.

The boat is rated for 135 HP and there is a '09 ETEC available, 130 HP. The hull, stringers and transom are sound.

The delemma is to rebuild the old engine mechanically, but it will still have the old ignition system, wires and other parts or to rationalize a the new one for reliabiliy, realizing that I lust for the extra power.

Then there is the old boat, new engine inigma. However, this should last the rest of my boating life.

Your philosophies are welcome.

If the boat is solid and you still enjoy it now as much as you did before, that is the perfect scenario for a repower. Nothing beats a dependable comfortable boat.

If you like the boat's layout, transom is sound, steering cables sound, wiring sound, buy a replacement engine. They'll start getting cheap on the used market up north in about 2 months if you want to come up here..

You'll not only get more power from the Etec, but also better fuel and oil economy, and much lower emissions. The payback period will be long, but you can't take it with you!

I've never understood the old boat new engine thing. I have an 06 outboard on a '80 boat. I looked around at used outboards and although I'm not rich I think the economics worked in favor of a new one for me. Watch Ebay and you may be surprised at some of the prices you find on new or 1 year old outboards.

That 130 Etech is about $9k brand new. While that is indeed a lot of money, it doesn't seem like a bad deal to me. The performance compared to your current motor will be amazing. My 18' Starcraft fits in my garage and fits my boating needs perfectly. When something major goes wrong with my current motor, I may very well pull the trigger on a new one. To replace the whole rig would be somewhere around $25k+.

Does that include the oil tank, controls, install, etc?

Thanks Mike

Man, if you love your boat and it's in great shape, go for the repower.

I'd try another compression tester.

Don't forget that with the internet, it's very easy to find good, late model used motors.

Many times, a person will buy a boat--only to trade up to a larger outboard motor six months later. I bought a 115 hp Yamaha 2 stroke that had less than 6 months' usage when the guy wanted another 10 mph on his bassboat--and I saved $2300.

IBoats.com has a 75 hp Merc Optimax for $5K and a 115 hp Yamaha 4 stroke for $6.8K--still under warranty.
