new engine & drive installed....what's the boat price ????

Hi Again,

I saw a beautiful winner Cabin cruiser 1973 that was completely gutted and redone. all items on boat are new. 2002 engine installed with a brand new v drive system. Boat repainted, gallery replaced, sterring..etc.....

Question: If over 10,000 was replaced on the boat, does the owner have every right to add that to the blue book value?

Example, Blue book....9,500
new engine etc.........10,000
Sale price for 1973....19,500

Thanks,
Loi

He can add however much he wants, although he may not get it! Compare other boats of the same type and year. See what they go for and then make a decision as to weather it's worth what he's asking.

I would like to see the 1973 boat selling for $9500. Was this work completed by mechanics or some guy in the back yard? Are you getting any kind of warranty? If making money on boats like this made money, I'd quit my job today, and start rebuilding boats, trains, planes, (I'm a helicopter mechanic) autos and motorcycles (ex Harley factory mechanic).

They have every right to ask what ever they want for their boat, but to ask that at the end of the boating season will not persuade many buyers to part with that kind of money. If it is an absolute collectors item then it may sell for more. Will your insurance company insure it for what you paid is another concern too.

In cars, if you put a new $1900 engine into an old winter beater thats worth $500 dose not mean it's worth $2400 after. I know boating is alot different and you don't want to insult the seller after all that work so that he won't even return your calls.

When you are talking that much money you might consider having it properly appraised by someone your insurance company uses, that way you will be comfortable in what you offer the seller and so will your insurance company.

Good luck,
Mike.

When I repower a boat for a customer, I always tell them up front that just because you put a $10,000 engine package in the boat doesn't mean its worth $10,000. The boat is only worth what the blue book says it worth plus whatever you can talk the buyer into. It is always less expensive to repower than to buy a new boat but only if you plan to keep the boat. I'm with MKask, I'd be hard pressed to pay $9500 for a 73 model boat.

Hi Guys,

Ok, let me be more clear. The 73 is not going for 9,500..he wants 18,000. I just figured tha a 73 might go for 9,500 plus all the work this guy did on it. I'm trying to justifed his price.

The boat has a 3 year warrantee on the engine & drive. ( so he says) I am meeting with him sunday since it's still in the water, I'll take it for a drive.

So my "clearer" question is: Is a 73 boat fully restored worth 18,000. ?? If not, How much should I offer without getting shot?

Thanks,
Lou

stunod - Have you checked out other boats that you could get for $18k? From what you have written it sounds like you have pretty much made up your mind. If you think it is "the" boat for you by all means go for it. I hope though that if you do you will not look back in six months from now and say to yourself "Boy was that a dumb move."

I suspect that most contributors to this forum would urge you to slow down a bit. Your call - I hope you will have no regrets whatever you do.

If you did make an offer on the boat, I would make sure it was conditional on a professional survey. Especially if you pay a premium on a very old boat touted to be near perfect. I doubt if you had to resell it you would recoup the majority of your money.

To give you and idea of other boats like this, I have a friend in the middle of buying a 1973 26' Stamas hardtop. It was repowered in the mid 90s volvo penta duoprop engine/outdrive now with about 500 hours on it, it has a 4 stroke kicker, autopilot, a real nice set of electronics that were new in 2000, and some other nice recent upgrades. He described the boat as in excellent condition that had been well cared for. I don't think it had a shiney new paint job though.

If I remember right the list price was 14,500 and the agreed price was 11,500 conditional on a professional survey.

He felt he is paying a premium for the boat, but it was worth it because of the shape it was in. He does not plan to resell either.
