Just installed a rebuilt 350 marine engine into a 21 albemarle. What is the proper break in procedure?

Re: New Engine Breakin

did you rebuild it yourself or buy it from a manufacture? reason I ask is that some of the manufacturers have specific warranty related procedures and also some run the engine in at the factory. if you built it yourself then after turning the engine over with the starter before cranking it up will get the oil into all the parts. then immediately after actually starting it, if its hitting on all 8 then continue running at about 1800 RPM for about 20 minutes. this is critical for the cam and lifters to marry properly. then after that you can do pretty much as you wish.. there are several other things that may or may not help, but this procedure is critical.

If you want to make this engine to last take your TIME. Don't run the engine over 2500 rpm for aleast the first 8 hrs. Then Change the Oil ! Don't open it all the way up for more than a min. or two for the next 20 hours. Change the OIL again. Then Have fun.

Hello. Couldn't agree more. Although with today's improved machining (ie: improved cylinder bore finish), break-in is less critical than previously, it's still a good idea. The cam, as stated, is most vulnerable at this time. The rpm's must be up as stated to ensure a good amount of splash to the cam lobe and lifter. A cam break-in compound applied during assembly, a primed oil pump, carb bowls topped with fuel (if applicable) and the distributor lined up with certainty on #1 (not 180 out), followed by the next 20 minutes with a non-synthetic oil with sulfer are critical. Then change to oil and filter of choice. Unlike drag and street engines, these marine duty applications live their whole lives under load, so we must be even more compulsive about their assebly and maintenance! Whew!

crawdad, glad to hear things are working out for you. there are many different opinions on how to break in your motor, but for the most part, after cam and lifters have been married, the next concern are the rings as you have said, I believe they will seat just fine under normal operating conditions. that does not mean going out and running WOT for hours on end, nor does it mean idleing all day long. just run the boat at various speeds for a season or two, and you should be fine.........good luck.........
