New changes to 90 TLDI?

I noticed the 90 TLDI have undergone some changes from last year. The weight is now 337# instead of 315#, and the gear ratio is 2.3:1 instead of 2:1. I bought a new 90 TLDI in 2003 with a 2:1 gear ratio and have been very happy with it. My only observation is that I have a hard time getting the rpm's into the middle of the range with a 15" pitch prop on a 20' light (1000 lb) wooden shallow 8 degree deadrise skiff. I actually had to drop down to a square prop when I carry any kind of a load.

Will this new gear ratio allow for a higher pitch prop without over propping? When I bought this motor for this boat, I really expected to spin a 17" pitch prop.

Can use any pitch prop as long it meets engine's wot parameters, that is inside min, max rpm given for that engine, ideal at middle, use a tacho to test any prop.

Its a trial and error thing, but the short answer is a qualified yes. You might not be able to swing that 17, but you could probably swing a 16....
