New Boater-Sea King-Need advice!

Okay... I'm brand new to boating. I've got a 14' John boat with a 5hp Sea King on it. I've several questions for anyone who can offer some good advice.

1. what is the year and manufacturer?
Model# GG8960A
Serial# 75x671223
2. How should I be mixing the fuel? It says on the motor 1/2 pint to 1 gallon using SAE30 oil, however a mechanic at a local marina who says it should be more like 10ish ozs. oil with the modern outboard oil. Any thoughts?
3. It stalls. The motor just straight cuts out when tooling around the river with no warning. Doesn't seem to be affected by throttle position or anything else. It's a little hard to start but it does fire up again and runs fine for another 15 minutes or so. Where do I begin?
4. Gas with ethanol... Do I need a stabilizer or special maintainance?

Thanks in advance.

Re: New Boater-Sea King-Need advice!

Welcome, I have the 55 version of your motor. That is a 57 fuel mix is 24:1 5.3 ozs per gallon.TCW3 rated oil.
These motors a close cousins to the Evinrude Johnson 5.5.Uses the same
impeller which should be changed if you don't know the age. Same coils Should be inspected. If any cracks or discoloration should be changed.
These are sweet running motors capable of 12 mph with a light load.
There is a vast supply of parts new and used some right here at iboats based on the E/J 5.5 applications.Don't worry about the ethanol.
You may want to go through the fuel system from tank to carb with special attention to cleaning.

Hey thanks a lot for your reply and also the warm welcome to the world of boating! The previous owner replaced the coils about 2 years ago. Not sure about the impeller. As far as the stalling issue I think you're right about cleaning the fuel system. Now, if what you're telling me is true, I've got about 2x the amount of oil in the mix than I need. It's not smoking or anything. Are there any other clues I should be looking for that my mix isn't right. The mechanic I talked to told me that usually the rule of thumb is that for these old motors is that if (for example) you were mixing a pint of oil to 6 gallons of gas, when you mix a tcw3 oil you should change the ratio to about a pint of tcw3 to 5 gallons of gas. He then told me to convert the proportions to my motors mix ratio and sent me on my way. I'm more likely to trust the opinion of someone who is actually using a similar motor to mine. Also, do you have any idea where I could get a service manual (beside the $50 Ken Cook offering) for my old beast. I think she's got a lot of life left!

Thanks again,
AJE

The mechanic was wrong. A quart per six gallons is right, not a pint. Using the pint, you get about 48:1. A pint gives you 24:1. Don't skimp on the oil for your old girl, and she'll keep running for you for a long time.

Thanks a lot for your help. I'll mix up a gallon at 24:1 and see how she runs, and I'll be wary of the advice from that marina from now on.

You might watch Ebay for a ser. manual.I stumbled on a factory manual there.
Covers 48-57 Gale built motors.Don't recall exact price but it didn't exceed $20.There are any number of manuals on cd also.
My Owner guide for my 5hp has excellent routine repair procedures, specs exploded drawings and comeplete parts list. The factory manual has exploded parts drawings but the part numbers must have been seperate.
