I purchased a 1965 18' Silverline with a 120hp I/O and MC1 ( actually not mc-1, something older) outdrive

Here is a picture of the boat and the truck I tow it with.

So far I love this boat. I have had it out one time to test everything, and now it is time to make all the repairs the PO did not. While this boat is is great shape as far as seats, carpet, sound system (with a hidden potential for more sound that is already installed), and motor. The outdrives trim system, shift interrupt switch, and control cables are in need of some attention.

I have pictures of the related concerns on another device. As of now, I do have the outdrive serial number: 2069709

As for a little basic info. This is my first boat. I have only driven one other, had rented a pontoon boat ... it was great! I was hooked! I do like to fish, and will even more so now. I live close to Bass Lake, CA
I have found tons of great info on this site that has helped me identify and understand all the new systems (I am a automotive service tech).

I have only been here a short time but still sad to hear about Don's passing. It was his posts that help me to understand the trim and shift interrupt systems. I was too late to thank him ...


Well thats about it for now. I will post the rest for another device...

Like I said no problems here :cool:
Fires right up, runs great at any rpm (only took it to 3.5 maybe 4k for a short period)

Here is my shift interrupt switch :grumpy:

This NEEEDS to be addressed!
I will be adjusting the shift cables to get it into forward with out having to go to the rear and shove it in by hand, but I'm sure I will end up needing to replace them lol
< Main concern here is getting the correct kit for the new switch, and will I have to remove the inner transom plate ( or motor :confused:) to install it? >

It would appear that those are not the correct shocks (for lack of the correct term)
Also not sure why the lower is white, possibly replaced/rebuilt at some point?
This one's got me ... Lots of parts to get back to functioning.
This is originally equip with an older style of "power trim"[tilt] it's meant to go all the way or all the way down. Trim is adjusted manually at a stop by moving the pin in the holes of the outer transom plate. (Edit: gimble ring)
As for now I would like to get the pin I need to set my trim, which is just like an outboard :)facepalm: perhaps searching for the outboard part may help.)
I would like to get, but may just make one, a bracket to hold the outdrive up for towing.
Other then that, I think I will have no reverse lock. I still haven't figured out if is part of the trim hydraulic system, or if the rams hold it, or what the switch on the side of the out drive is for.
Looks like a restore vs upgrade for this end of the trim system
(depending also on the out come of the reverse lock I may be able to leave it)

Here is my trim[tilt] pump.

One line is floating around back there comes from the pump. There is a hard line at the pump that is capped off.
Trim[tilt] pump does work as far as: push trim[tilt] button, motor makes running noise. I dont want to burn it out, just needed to verify. Fluid did spit out of the loose hose. Was pink and aerated.
System is mostly empty and missing parts. Of no concern at the moment.

Thanks. Thats a 1970 with a 300 straight six, four on the floor. Needs power steering and front disc upgrade, but I found a donor truck. Grand Cherokee may end up towing in the not so near future.

You'll do Better, by up-gradin' the drive to 1 that parts Can be bought for,...
MC-1, or an Alpha 1 would be Great,....

Unfortunate info but I figured as much. The inner transom does say "Mercruiser I" , but I have yet to further investigate the serial number. Thanks

I have browsed, I need to clean it up a bit and get some more pictures. According to the "glove box" it is a Newport. I think this model of Newport was also called the Newport Daytona in a later year. Been hard to find out.

This may turn into a great Frankenstein project. I should be able to rig it up for, at the very least, a slow ridin' fishing boat. It does have a trolling motor mount.

Time for more searching. Thanks for giving me a direction.

I'm not 100% sure I have it right, but I think the Newport was the OB version and the Newport Daytona was the I/O.

The lower and upper are seperate chambers so you fill the oil for the lower and upper seperately. The original color for the drive was white. The little shocks are correct and that is basically what they are, shocks. Mine still work. The power tilt is just that. tilt. Trim is setup like an outboard with no power trim, you pick a set of holes and slip in the tilt rod. My plan for mine is to do what Bond said, upgrade. I plan to find something in the 80's with a 140 and swap them. Mine does suffer from 47 year old wiring so that is being addressed right now.

Did you have to replace your interrupt switch?
Also concerning the trim rod ... I don't have it, I think I will go to the hardware store and grab a bolt/washer/nut setup for the meantime.
You mention the short shocks are right, my seloc manual doesn't seem to have any info on them. (I will look through it again, I could have missed it.) If they are just shocks, what moves the outdrive up and down for the power tilt?
I am missing trim lines anyway, not sure if I will bother restoring this system. I may however attempt to retrofit a newer system into it.

I would hate to rip out such a nice old system. If I do decide to replace a large part I may look to just replace the outdrive and transom. I still have a lot to learn.
But for the moment I just want to get out on the lake one more time this season.
I need a trim rod and a shift cable adjustment, and hope for the best.

Sorry for the delay. Busy with work and life. The Seloc manual should have something about the small shocks. I have the small tilt rams (1") and that is all they are, tilt, no trim. Trim is handled by where the tilt rams are bolted to the lower part of the gimbal housing. I call it the sideburns but I am sure someone will correct me. The shift interrupt has been a real pain. I still don't have it tuned perfect but I am having fuel system problems so it will have to wait until next season.

Those brochures are GREAT! What an awesome line of boats. Keep at that refurb job. End up with a boat to be proud of.

I have read quite a few posts pointing out that manual specifically, one of the more involved members had said not to ask questions until that book was owned. Lol or something like that anyway.
I have found the book to be a little hard to understand at first. But so were auto repair books at first. They keep it very simple and expect a certain amount of implied knowledge.

One of my favorite examples is from the Hyundai factory service manual for 06 sonatas and azreas. To replace the alternator the manual states "remove bolts, remove alternator.", even shows a drawing of the alternator and the bolts pulling out, does not show motor or any of the surrounding objects lol. Fact is you have to either pull the radiator to pull it thought the top, or move the a/c compressor and pull some subframe bolts to let it hang, to pull it through the bottom. Warranty flat rate time sucked for that job :(

I have found a lot of info here, thank you all (beyond this thread)
If there is another, "better" manual, I am open to check it out.

Just throwing this all out there. Corrections, opinions welcome.

Not sure if what I got it is 1a 1b or 1c
According to the list, and the serial number on my outdrive, that leaves me with these:
Model 80 66-69
Model II 64-67
Model 120/140 67-69
Model 160 67-69

My outdrive lower looks like it may have been replace, I think those four are all the same(ish).
I do not have the transom number, the plate is gone.

Power Tilt system parts are available.
Without a functioning tilt system there is no reverse lock.
Looking into getting parts for this. A newer trim system would allow for the removal of the shortie shocks as well as the original reverse lock. With the bonus of being a full functioning trim. Need to measure to cylinders and get the newer per style pump.

Interrupt switch I'm not too worried about. I have seen a post about someone who made a small bracket for a switch he had got. I think I will wire up a button at the controls and a relay set up to keep button current low.
Any idea what amp the switches are rated at?

For the shift cables, I adjusted the upper, lower, and then upper again. I feel good about it into forward, but the spot that slides needs to slide better for reverse. It binds a little and the cable does not move the last 1/4" without help. With no reverse lock no reverse anyway. Small potatoes if I get a full trim system.
Also removed old tilt pump and relay.

Working on cleaning up some of the old wires too.
Bilge pump and lights work, but need re wires between load connection and switch.

Other than that, I need to clean it up a bit, and get winterize figured out before it gets too cold.
