Just picked it up at a car auction. Won;t go into the boring details but bid on the wrong one and am stuck with it.

Can someone tell me a little about this beast. What kind of cruise speed would be a close estimate and also wide open?

The fact these are pre-alpha drives, neither is a counter rotation, is this a bad thing? Can an alpha one style SEI drive be put on to make it counter rotation?

This is equipped with twin 470's so I will ahve my work cut out for me.

You picked up a boat that was in the family of the best boats that was ever made. I have no idea how fast it should run. I also had a 470 Mercruiser with the Mercruiser One outdrive in a 16 1/2' V hull bowrider.

The 470 engine was a 223 cubic inch Mercury aluminum block with the head off a 460 Ford. They didn't have much power out of the hole, however they had good mid range power. Mercury dropped it pretty quickly for the 4.3 Chevy based unit in current use--a fantastic performer.

The boat is in need of tender loving care. A good waxing can do wonders on a boat. I would certainly suggest you have the motors and lower units checked out carefully--including new impellers and all new bellows. 470's had closed cooling systems, so you'll want to have the heat exchangers inspected--and make sure antifreeze is in the system.

If you have motor or outdrive problems, yank the engines and outdrives and fiberglass the holes through the hull. If you put a couple of external aluminum motor mounts on the transom and put a pair of big modern 4 stroke outboards on the boat, you'll then have a real performer that's bulletproof.

This is a hull of the highest quality with fiberglass 2X thicker than what you'll find now. Such quality is worth modernizing if the rest of the boat is good.

I can't answer to any engine stuff on this, I'm not an I/O guy (never owned one), but the brand name is one to conjure with. Give her some TLC and it looks like you will have a really sweet ride.

The hull itself and the cabin look to be in pretty nice shape for the year. Definitely a cool boat. I'm just worried about the condition of those motors and drives.
