Hello all,

My wife and I just bought a 1997 Bayliner Capri LS 1750. Overall the boat is in good shape however, some tuning up is in order. The boat has the Mercruiser 3.0 Litre/LX 181CID 4 cylinder engine with 135hp Serial Number: 0K195214. I am going to order the owners manual soon however I would like to get started on some of the simple stuff.

I am trying to figure out if the stern drive is an Alpha One Gen1 or Gen 2. Serial Number on the stern drive: 0K252551

I saw on the newer 3.0 Litre engine the recommended oil is: Mercury Mercruiser Full-Synthetic 20W-40, NMMA FC-W Rated. I bought Quicksilver Marine Oil 20W-40 Full-Synthetic from Walmart and I am hoping this is a good substitute. I am assuming it will hold around 4 quarts with the filter change. Currently there is a FRAM PH30 oil filter installed. I bought a FRAM PH8873 before I knew what was currently on it. I believe the PH8873 will fit as well however I may just return it and get the PH30 since I know that fits. Let me know if you suggest any other type of oil.

As far as spark plugs it currently has new Autolite spark plugs installed. I am thinking about switching them out to a better brand. The top of the engine states Spark Plugs.... AC-MR42LTS .035" Gap. Don't know if you guys know of any cross referenced spark plugs. Thinking about maybe Bosch. Also, I will eventually replace the plug wires.

The Drive Oil Reservoir is almost dry. Which Drive Oil should I use?

The serpentine belt is stretched and has a good amount of play. I believe I can replace this belt with the Duralast Belt Part# 15400 alternate part# 13400 from AutoZone. The boat does not have power steering so it should be a 40" belt.

I replaced the gear oil in the stern drive with Pennzoil Marine 80W-90 Gear Lube.

I will be replacing the fuel filter located under the fuel pump. Looks like Mercury Part Number: 35-8M0046751 I am also thinking about maybe installing an in-line fuel filter that is rated around 90 Microns... let me know if that is a good number.

The stern drive has some zyrk fittings for grease. What is a grease that I should use?

I mixed a can of SeaFoam in with some fresh gas and the engine has gradually been running more and more smooth as I run it. I believe the carb may need a little adjusting as it runs smooth when underway however, it begins to choke 30 seconds to a minute after going back to idle.

Anyways, I am sure I may have missed something. Let me know if there is anything else I should check. We are looking forward to this summer with our new boat and I am looking forward to getting this engine to purrrrrr!
