The inlaws bought a new boat and I have a few question about it.

1. First the trottle wont stay down/open, the father in law says that it is a safety feature... is it?

2. the steering wheel is way off, it looks turned when I am going straight. How do I correct it? I would imagine it is just loosen and tighten on the other end, is that correct or am I expecting it to be easier that it is going to be.

3. It has a ski pylon/tripod, how do I connect the ski rope to it? is there a clip or does it get looped around and tied some special way.

Yo Wannago,

1.) The throttle going back by itself is not a safety feature. There is a tension adjustment inside the thottle assembly. If the throttle assembly is intact then this can be adjusted to hold the throttle at any position.

2.) If you mean the steering wheel is not straight, then something has been changed that caused this. The "adjustment" depends on what that work was. The mechanism at the helm could be off, or the connecting linkages at the engine could be off. (At this point I am assuming this is an outboard.)

3.) You should post this question in the Water Skiing topic section and I am sure you will get lots of help there. I have googled knots before and found some interesting help also.

Thanks for the reply!! And yes it is a outboard. I haven't looked at the steering but will before we take it out next time.

1. Adjust throttle cable tension.
2. Straighten the motor. Remove the steering wheel and put it back on straight.
3. Depends on the tow line, but I doubt it "clips".

2. Yeah, the steering wheel is on a spline shaft, typically all the splines are the same size so you can install the steering wheel in any position. Like mentioned before, make sure your motor is straight, pull the steering wheel off and reinstall it in the straight position.
Note on removing the steering wheel: If the wheel does not come off once you remove the big nut, turn the big nut on about 3-4 threads worth, then lightly tap on the nut with a hammer while pulling on the steering wheel, it should pop right off.

Make sure the engine turns the same amount in each direction before you change anything. There could have been a problem with the alignment between the actuating gear mechanism and the cable adjustments at the motor at one time and that is why the steering wheel is not aligned now.

If it turns the same in each direction then taking the wheel off and realigning will do the trick.
