Any opinions on this boat? It sat for two years and I think carbs are junked up. But it has 70hp evinrude and seems solid, but this being my first boat not really sure what to look for. I got boat, trailer, and motor for $500! Any and all thoughts appreciated.

Ever hear the saying 'a picture is worth a thousand words'? It really helps to have some visuals and detailed info. If its in solid shape, runs and has a good trailer then $500 is a steal.

I'll get some up on Friday. Been working until after dark recently.

Are they reliable boats? Any known issues?

e-gads.......another starmada person. lol  :p:D

you have friends here. ;)

Welcome to iboats !

is this a glass or tin boat?

there is no such thing as a reliable boat when it comes to hull only.
reliable comes form the motor.

each boat has its own personality, and its demons, however....for the most part...they all float !

the key is in taking care of them.......banging reevits, or keeping the deck dry ....it doesnt matter.....if you treat it right....it will get you back to shore.

by the time i type this....there might be about 5 guys welcoming you to the starcraft club !...
you will get tons of info here......check out the restoration section....as well as the starcraft forum in the forums by manufacturers groups inder the main forum listings......the starcraft forum moves quite quick !

I had a 1979 15ft Capri. Although the tri hull rode a bit rough in bigger waves and it wasn't a big water boat, it sure made a fine fishing platform with the great big open front end.
I had a lot of fun with that boat.

That motor, if running, it worth more than the $500 so I'd pick it up just for that.

A Capri is most like a fiberglass tri-hull. Very stable but will beat you in the chop. Your biggest concern with the boat is rot in the deck, stringers, and/or transom. Check it out carefully. ANY soft spots are usually trouble.

It's definitely fiberglass. This is gonna be dumb but how do you check for rot? It appears and feels solid but I'm sure that's deceiving.

On a side note I also found a 21' Starcraft aluminum boat with 115 evinrude for 800, but that seems like a lot of boat?

If the deck is solid and the transom isn't flexing....I sure wouldn't go looking for trouble!!! Just use it!

Yeah that's a big boat. Sounds like a heck of a deal for $800 though. Again, the motor is worth that if it runs.

As a 1970s glass Starcraft, check the stringers and transom thoroughly for signs of rot. The wood bits were poorly sealed from the get-go and unless the boat has been babied, there's a good chance the cores are punky... Slide under the motor well and reach up under the cockpit sole to check the stringers - there's a hole in the floor above the drain plug area. Use an ice pick and poke around, particularly at the base of the stringers and keel. Also, feel for dampness as the foam likes to soak up water - see my rebuild threads...
