Re: new boat need help.. Lots of help,

Hi Lake Time,
You can get complete used powerheads for $350-$450. That the only way I'd fix it.
The Merc is a 1971. The ing parts could cost
you $350 for the CD block(new) and $275+? for
the trigger (new).
Merc went Blue decals in 1972.I'd pass on it.
Its sat to long and probably was not storage sealed when it was put away. The crank and rods get rusty from sitting around. The later 4cyl Mercs and 3 cyl OMC are good motors. look for 75 or newer ones and check the compression on them.Take them for a ride
to see how they run or have a dealer check it out.
good luck...corm

Re: new boat need help.. Lots of help,

Thanks Corm,

Do you know where I can get a power head then? I looked and they wanted $1100 (as I said I am new to boats so did not know where to look) I would be glad to pay a finders fee to anyone who can locate one in usable condition.

Do you even think the merc would be worth stripping for parts?

One other question on my old 73 tri-hul. The old owner said it was rated to 100 hp but I cannot find the plate anywhere saying that. (they should have a plate right?) Would it be a problem if I put a 140hp on it? I am not going skiing, just have a killer deal on '82 140hp Johnson ($1000). Could I put a smaller prop on it to tame the engine?

Any legal problems as there is no plate.. The new engine weighs about 130 pounds more then the one it came with?

Thanks again in advance.

Dave

Re: new boat need help.. Lots of help,

Hey Lake_Time,
The Merc is almost worth fixing around here
as there are few mid range engines. So I think its worth buying for parts.
How long is your boat and the brand also the model.I'll look it up.Legal problems, depends on the Dept of Natural Resorces or Fish& Game
Sheriff Dept,Who ever regulates the boating on lakes there.
...have fun...corm

Re: new boat need help.. Lots of help,

Wow,
You are way too helpful, the boat is a 73 Glasspar model 150.
I do a lot of work with the DOW (Division of Wildlife) and a few casual conversations have suggest that provided I don’t drive like a fool that they have better thing to do with their time, (like ticket the drunks).
My question really relates to the fact that there should be a plate right? Is it a legal problem if is it missing. Will I get a ticket?

Anyway if you need any other info about the boat just ask. I have thousands of questions as this is my first toy boat. I lived in England on a 70ft Narrow boat so this is all a little new, like fiberglass and steering wheels!!
If anyone you know has a block for that Johnson then I’ll be happy to hear about, if not then it looks the 140HP. What can I do the re-enforce the transom anyway, as it is nearly 30 years old. The boat is completely stripped at the moment.

Thanks again

Dave

Hi Dave,
[My question really relates to the fact that there should be a plate right? Is it a legal problem if is it missing. Will I get a ticket?]
Maybe, your boat maybe granfathered in some states. I'll post the rateing tag info for you. Here they make you take it off the water.
Can't use it till you get a tag.

[What can I do the re-enforce the transom anyway, as it is nearly 30 years old. The boat is completely stripped at the moment.]
If the wood is punky, it can be replaced.
You can also wrap the transom with 10 gauge
flat steel. From the inside of the splash well to the top of the inner transom to the back edge and then down to 2 inches below the
motor bracket.Make it as wide as possible.
email me a fax no and I'll send you a diagram
and then I'll destroy your fax no.rather than
sell it

.

[The new engine weighs about 130 pounds more then the one it came with?]
Just put a nice female in the back of the boat to see where the water line will be.

Re: new boat need help.. Lots of help,

HI,
Thanks for the Fax. So really what this does is spread the load out over a larger portion of the back of the boat and you drill the new plate and use the motor mounting bolts to hold it on. I may try this with aluminum (as I have access to a TiG to weld it) it should take he weight down a lot. Do you see and foreseeable problems with aluminum? Vs steel?

Re: new boat need help.. Lots of help,

Hi LT
I have never used AL,but if the alloy is stiff enough it should work. I have seen people use AL diamond plate, but it's heavy too. If it doesn't work you can always redo
it. The transom will be stronger nomatter what you use. My puter crashed hard and had to reformat so I kind of lost my place here.
...good luck...corm

Re: new boat need help.. Lots of help,

Dave,
The missing engine serial # plate is problematic. People do not remove these things unless the engine has been stolen at one point. I do not believe the law would ever look but the missing plate makes insurance impossible. The transom wood MUST be replaced. Other wise the engine will come into the boat to meet you upon acceleration. You can grind out the edges of the transom with a die grinder-laminate plywood and glass in, I'm doing it now!..
