1970 Thompson Sidewinder 16ss w/ 115 Tower of power my question is could someone send me a link to winterizing this as I'm new to outboards and these Chicago winters get cold fast. Also I already have earmuffs and fogging can.
She isnt the prettiest inside and the outside is so so. But this will be somewhat of a build thread. I just picked it up for $900 after a test run on the local river. The engine runs nicely and all lights work. On top of that it has a new battery and pinoneer HU with 4 speakers, new floors and solid hull.

looks like a great deal for 900.00. A bit hard to fish off of but the engine alone is probably worth that.

Sidewinder was a really good v hull boat. With a 150 hp motor, they were pretty fast.

Winterization on a 2 stroke:

Put a water muff on the engine.
Start it and warm up the engine.
Then, disconnect the fuel line.
When the engine starts to stumble, spray with an engine fogging spray.
It'll quit.
Pull the spark plugs, and replace them.
Drain the lower unit grease, looking for any signs or water or bubbles.

On any used boat:

Have the lower unit pressure and vacuum tested to see if the seals are good. This is done w/o any lower unit grease in it.
Change the water pump impeller, whether it needs it or not.
Checkout all filters and traps within the fuel system to make sure it's not gummed up.
Clean and repack the wheel bearings.

Thanks guys.
Yea I talked to the PO and he said he woukd help me. Also he told me to buy stabilizer, 2 jugs of antifreeze and fog which I have.
Next is regestering it in IL which should be fun. (inset sarcasm) and my trailer doesn't have a titles so I'm going to go thru the MAine titling service.

In florida I bought a trailer built in South dekota no title (DILLY) and there out of buisiness so I couldn,e get the whole SN on the trailer. I had to take it to a weigh station and have the trailer weighed and register it as home made. It worked here, just wondering if they allow that there. fogging the engine keeps it from rusting up the rings crank and bearings always a good idea just my opinion.

You don't need the anti-freeze. Outboards are self draining. There is no way to keep the anit-freeze inside the engine. Besides -- air doesn't freeze. Store the engine full down. Stabilize the fuel, run the engine long enough to get the mixture into the fuel system. Fog the engine if you wish. Drain the lower unit and check for water. Refill with fresh lube. Fix the lower unit now or in the spring if water intrusion is an issue. Replace the water pump impeller at the same time whether it needs it or not.

Whats with answering a random question before I reply? Because im a noob lol.
Anyway, I'm just going off what the previous owner has done. But I know antifreeze is expensive.
As for the trailer IL is ****ty because of the amount of crabby thieves that steal them and resell them as home made.
My old man told me that I shouldn't worry but I want to be legal. Also I'm waiting in the title for the boat. Because he bought it from a guy who had it behind his garage and fixed it up. He told me he filed for a lost one and is waiting for it in the mail. And we will meet up so I can then send it in. I have his address, social and phone number. I'm also seeing if a buddy can run the current regestration numbers to see who's name is on it. I have a feeling this will be a process but like I've been told I can get out of this boat even by selling the outboard.

??????????????

No one mentioned to PULL that prop, clean the splines and re-grease so as to insure that the prop doesn't become 'stuck' to the shaft.

It never hurts to do this a couple of times each years, especially if the boat sees more time in the water.

Same goes for the steering shaft/tube on the motor.

This boat will see a lot of water next year my old man has a 40' sun dancer so we are always out on the lake. I'll pull the prop when I can get this boat in the shop.

So if I have this right I don't need anti freeze as its pointless. I texted the previous owner and he said he used it to prevent the black from cracking.... Idk if that's true or not. Like I stated idk these engines.

if you tilt the engine up some antifreeze will stay in sections of the engine. It couldn,t hurt, As stated the engine in a full down position will not have water retained anywhere in the block. When water freezes it expands and is powerful enough to crack iron steel copper aluminum etc etc. If there is no water it cannot freeze and create this disaster he worried about.<EDIT> Actually I am wrong even anti freeze will freeze at a certain tempature and is not a good idea to use. The only time I see anti freeze used is if the boat is left in the water over the winter to help protect the watertube waterpump areas that may be affected by waves

Well im planning on winterizing the boat this friday. The boat is in Chicago so with winter creeping up on us these cold nights have me worried. I plan on just buying some stabalizer for the gas running that threw the engine, fogging the carbs, pulling the plugs and spraying inside there and not tightening the plugs all they way down. After that pull the battery, radio and gas tank and store them inside. Wrap the engine up and all done.
EDIT: also check lower unit
