1. The injection molded nylon is designed to distribute the impact throughout the part buffered by the permeable adhesive.
2. The electromagnetic field created from the motion of water and the lower unit is eliminated. This electromagnetic field suspends the paint molecules which in time is why you lose the paint off of the skew even thought you havent made contact with anything.
3. Looking at the bottom node on the Blackfin you can see the upward roll which which gives you lift at all angles of trim. This will cause you to use less trim to reach the same lift.
4. A stock skeg diverts water either left or right horizontally. The Blackfins 2 side generators hold the water vertically while the fin itself diverts the water horizontally. Imagine a picture of yourself trimmed and running down the river. Freeze the picture and realize that the stock skeg could be lifted from the water with no resistance because its flat and smooth. So with a stock skeg, the thrust from the prop is the ONLY thing keeping the bow up. With the Blackfin the side generators channel the water lifting the bow along with the prop thrust. Plus with both the horizontal and vertical control, the boat will have much less wobble side to side. Instantly you will notice a smoother ride using less motor trim to reach the same plane. Mercury marine assured us that they would own this product. They have spent years trying to make the entire lower unit out of a similar material but have failed.
5. The Blackfins surface area is over twice that of the stock skeg. Which paddle displaces more water? One that is 1 foot wide or one that is 2 feet wide. This will cause the steering to be more sentitive with fewer corrections. Idle speed turning is slow due to the lack of thrust from the prop. When loading at the ramp you see guys turn and throttle up to get the bow pointed in the right direction. With twice the surface area turning at low speeds is simple without using thrust from the prop.
6. When you hit an object underwater, the lower unit hits 1st then it slides to the skeg and then to the prop. The angle of the leading edge is greater and the Blackfin covers the entire unit so when you hit, you hit the Blackfin only and with the added height you clear the prop with no damage. I personally have had major high speed impact with a loaded boat and ripped the Blackfin off. My lower unit and prop were not scratched. The Blackfin can be installed in 24 hours.
7. Looking at the newer models, which include the Verado and the Optimax, you will see that the bottom of the skeg has been flared outward similar to the node on the Blackfin. Over time you will see side generators added to the newer designs. We have taken what was a flat smooth skeg and added features to enhance the performance of your existing lower unit.
