New BF75D idles rough

This is my first post here. I purchased a BF75D BBAJ1100072 engine this past summer. It is mounted on an 18' Alumacraft that I rebuilt and they make a really good setup. I am using the rig in central Texas, about 30 miles SE of Austin. The problem is with the engine. It has a really rough idle upon starting and it takes it about 5 minutes to smooth out. Even then it hesitates and stutters when going into gear, and also idles rough after a re-start when fishing. Also, the lower unit makes some pretty scary rattling noises when I put the engine in reverse. This engine is brand new and it seems to have some problems that a new engine shouldn't have. I have listened to other brands while launching at the boat dock and they don't seem to have these issues. The dealer explains the rough idle as the engine "searching for balance" until it smooths out. Huh? The lower unit noise is explained as nothing to worry about. Is this a normal behavior for a new Honda engine? I figured Honda would be top of the line, but, so far, it has proven to be sick and noisy. If anyone out there would care to relate their experiences with their engines, I sure would appreciate it.

Tak it into a different dealer. The rattling could be normal chatter from shifting the engine too slowly. The idling issue is not normal and needs to be fixed.

I went through some service headaches with my new Tohatsu. My advice would be to give the dealer one more try, and if you aren't satisfied get the manufacturer involved. Video document everything the engine is doing before taking it back in for the second time. If you get the "It is running fine" routine, the video might come in handy. It would also help to post the video somewhere like Youtube and put a link here so others can see exactly what it is you're talking about.
