I am looking to buy an aftermarket sterndrive from Sterndrive Engineering. Has anyone have good or bad opinions with this? It is for a 1983 120 Mercruiser engine. Serial # 6808731. Thanks in advance.

I have read many positive comments here about SEI drives.

I don't have one, but have read many good things about them here, and on Speedwake and Offshoreonly.

Hard to beat for the money, and although the ones I have installed have been noisy, none have failed yet. And they don't have the corrosion protection a Merc drive has so I wouldn't recommend them for salt water use.

They are a little noisy, have a break in period, and the paint stinks... but its 1400 for the SEI vs 3500 for a Merc for a new one.

Ayuh,... The ONLY Bad mouthing I've heard Anywhere about the SEI drives,...
Comes from folks who used to make their livin' rebuilding Mercruiser Alphas....

Unless you've got a Merc. Tech in your backpocket like I do,...
The SEIs are Cheaper than Rebuilding/ Resealing an Alpha...
I pay Cheap for the Labor end, but if I get a drive that needs any Parts as well,(beyond the seal kits)...
SEI makes sense...

Thanks for the replies. Price wise it seems the way to go. Just was worried that the unit was good. Put my mind at ease. I will get one. THANKS.

I've put a couple on - used exclusively in salt water. And yes, the paint is not good. Just keep a rattle can of Rustoleum handy.
