Anyone had any bad experiences with the 2 stroke carb 90hp yamaha outboards? Looking at a 17' aluminum bass boat with one. Are these very thirsty on gas?

good engines, probably among the best ever made by any brand. however they usually suffer the same slow death by customer neglect and inept service techs.

I had a Boat with a pair of those, don't think they were particularly hard on fuel, but they were extremely reliable and a simple motor, not so powerfull or smooth, but overall, very good, as mentioned keep up the Maintenance, especially flushing so it does not over heat at speed, seemed to be a common "feature" of them, salting up the water flow system.

I agree with both rodbolt and noelm.

The Yammy 90 2 stroke is a wonderful outboard, but because of its small displacement for a 90 it is not as strong at low and mid-range rpm as, say, a JohnnyRude 90. It is lighter and more economical, though, so it is still a good choice.

It would help if you posted the exact model number. The 90 hp and the 70 hp are from the same family of rugged reliable 3 cylinder engines. If you use good oil (Yamalube 2-M) and do maintenance they will run forever. Make sure you change the 2 anodes in the cylinder block and torque the spark plugs and cylinder head.

I run a 2005 on my 20cc aluminum G3 2072.
Starts up easy every time, runs great but does suck the fuel down pretty good.
