Hi guys, my mates and I have just bought a Mariner 60 hp 4 stroke outboard and it won't go over 4000 revs, is there a governor on it or is it something simple that has to be tweaked, we've a 2 year guarantee so hopefully no worries. The marine shop where we bought it are going to contact Mariner when they come back from their holidays this week, in fairness the mechanics haven't come across this before on a new engine. Any ideas ?

Some engines have an over rev limiter. When you hit a certain rpm, it starts cutting off the trigger pulses to keep the rpms down best I can tell.....there is a little chip in there that does it.

Purple, Brown, Black/Yellow stripe, and Black are the wire colors to the module in semi-recent 2 strokes. If you find it just disconnect it and make a run. Will answer that question.

Thanks Texasmark, will mention it to mechanics, maybe it's a faulty new engine.

Your engine is a four stroke. Do you have the s/n?

The serial number of the engine.

A new motor that won't rev could be one or a combination of things not quite right.

First is what prop, what boat, and how high is the motor mounted?

If the dealer set this up then these are all most likely correct as they have done this a number of times but it never hurts to look and check.

Next on the list is fuel FLOW from the fuel p[ump to the carbs. It is very easy to pinch a fuel hose and restrict flow using a zip tie to hold hoses and wire harness together. A loose hose clamp allowing air to suck in anywhere before the fuel pump. Or a piece of trash clogging the fuel check valve in the tank or the fuel pick-up tube sticking down into the tank.

Since this motor is still under warranty I suggest you don't mess with it. Take it back and let them check it out, make sure you get paperwork documenting that you have a problem as a restricted fuel system can cause damage running lean that is not always readily apparent.

We changed the prop and the height of the engine is correct, hopefully it'll be sorted soon before its time to take the boat (Orkney590TT) for the winter

Document how long the boat has been down, if more than a couple of weeks call the factory rep and ask if they will extend your warranty for all the down time. Weeks at a time start adding up, especially if you have to keep taking it back and the boat sits waiting its turn each time.

My first question is the tachometer properly set for the correct number of cylinders and 2/4 stroke? Is it reading the correct rpm's?

Does the engine seem like it's running good?

If it's all right, your engine could be set too low on the transom--plowing through the water. It could also have a prop with too much pitch.
