Has anyone seen this on the net? They are advertising a NEW 5 HP 4-stroke engine for around $700. I don't think anyone can beat that..? They say they have a unique overhead valve design for improved performance.

Sounds like a good deal to me. I'm interested.......

It pricks my curiosity. Wonder If I could fit it on my BR as a emergency kicker.....

Interesting. I've been curious about the 4-cycle outboard possibilities with B. and S. -- every time I mow my lawn. I didn't know they actually produced one. Mowers are designed to run at WOT, and I wonder how the outboard would do at idle -- also wonder whether its air-cooled.

Re: New 5 HP Briggs and Stratton Outboard

I know a guy who built 2 air cooled outboards by replacing blown powerheads with lawnmower engines. He said he never got a chance to try one on a boat because he sold them as soon as he put them together. said they would throw water out of the test barrel just fine.

Re: New 5 HP Briggs and Stratton Outboard

has the look of the Sears Gamefisher models that came with a Clinton powerhead. Maybe these will be produced for various retailers too, with the B and S engine -- like lawn mowers sold by Lowes, Home Depot, or whatever. I think there is a market niche there for outboards (would be kind of a marketing throwback to the '50s and '60s).

If the price is true this could be one of the best things to hit the market in a long time!!!

Re: New 5 HP Briggs and Stratton Outboard

B&S says they specialize in air cooled engines, so this is one. I wonder why other companies gave up on the air cooled idea years ago..? Does anyone know?

If you've ever seen mud motors (Go-Devil) they are also air cooled, lawn-mower type motors, but MUCH more expensive than this. Check out yahoo.com auctions, or half.com under "outboard" for this new B&S motor. Some folks are selling them for an introductory price of $689.

Re: New 5 HP Briggs and Stratton Outboard

I was ready to say that $700 would be pretty steep, but I see that Boat U.S. sells the Nissan 5hp 4-stroke for $1,230. The 2-stroke is about $1,000. Maybe there would be quite a market at $700 -- and it will probably be less if models are produced for the big chains. They need to keep the technology as simple as lawn mowers, with interchangeable parts readily available.

The weight would be comparble to the Nissan 2-stroke, which is 15lbs or so lighter than the 4-stroke model (Nissan).

Re: New 5 HP Briggs and Stratton Outboard

portercat100, the reason there isn't much in the air cooled OB department is most of the air cooled motors were DOGS. Hard to start, loud, poor running SOB's. I've worked on some the of the old junk (Clinton, Tecumseh, Eska) and none were anywhere close to the quality of the major manufacturers. B-S may be better (4C instead of 2C), but it's clear they are not for saltwater. Probably suited for a small lake.

Re: New 5 HP Briggs and Stratton Outboard

I read about this motor in an engineering magazine. They plan on selling them through Wal-Mart, Lowes, Home Depot, etc. It uses the same block as the lawnmower engine. Their target market is for kicker motors and dinghys for running around the marina.

Wildeone: What did she say? If it works I'll try the safety feature on my wife. Seriously, I'm kind of glad to see this motor. The selling point for me would be the availability of parts. I live in a rural area and most evertthing I need has to be ordered. A lot of fishing time lost. Happy Boating all, Hal

Re: New 5 HP Briggs and Stratton Outboard

I'm curious to know if it's completely air cooled without any waterpump (and impeller worries) or if it's air cooled with a "water cooled exhaust." I had an old Clinton 7.5hp - light weight for the power it produced. Ran like the devil on my little 12foot aluminum boat. When the impeller failed I mistakenly thought that since the powerhead was aircooled I could run w/o it. WRONG!! The lower leg heated up and the motor fried and seized. I miss that old light-weight motor.

Re: New 5 HP Briggs and Stratton Outboard

this would be a GREAT motor for small lakes or big ponds...maybe ill have to get one for my 10 foot jon boat...Nissan 4 stroke engines are a bit steep, but i think i can afford this one at around $700. i am also a bit concerned about the idle speed factor, however. B&S are made to run at full throttle. anyone know what gears are available? (F<N<R?)
