I'm looking to replace a too big, too heavy Johnson 85 hp (1973) on my 16 ft glass runabout. About where in model years do we start to see a higher fuel efficiency in the OMC line of 50-70 hp models? Would like to get something less thirsty and ligher for this rig. Any suggestions about side and model year? Also how are the 1999 and 2000 2 strokes in terms of pollution compliance and effiency?

I would go 4 stroke if I were you. I just got one and love it...

I would also recommend staying away from late model OMC's. Those are the ones that put them under...Corby

Re: New 2 strokes

Well new two strokes are great. That 73 johnson weighs quite a bit but then again so do the 4 strokes. A bit of info to keep in mind. In 1973 Johnson horsepower was rated at the head so actually you are getting much less at the prop (and when you combine the age to boot). So if you go with a newer motor that is rated at the prop the weight may not matter as much.

I think that a newer 2 stroke will really impress you and I agree the new 4 strokes are nice too. Your choice, your wallet.
