Sorry for all the questions,I want to get it right.I'm changing my gimbal bearing for the first time.I have a sealed bearing.Does the outside of the tolerance ring or between the ring and the bearing get grease? What about where the shaft goes through the center? The yellow dot is on the bearing but theres no hole .Does that need to align with anything?Cant see why it would matter.Should I clean the old grease out from where the bearing sits and grease it or bang it in dry? Why does the zerk have to come out and get plugged? No water is getting in through a zerk. The old bearing is out and new one in the freezer. Also whats the best way to hold the water passage o ring in place, vasoline, a little grease?

If it was mine I would leave the zerk fitting in. May never need it, but if you ever replaced it in the future and someone said I have the old style bearing that needs grease for 5 bucks, I would use it. The one in my Rinker is original and that's 21 years.

As for the O-ring, Merc says use bellows adhesive, but I use grease, much easier to clean up also

It's a good idea to pull the old bearing, clean everything up inside where the bearing rests, don't really have to but you can lightly lube up the outside diameter of the bearing where it slides into the gimbal housing for any easier slide, position the bearing Dot at the 10 o'clock position and drive the bearing in.

The grease seal behind the bearing is not really needed for the perma lube gimbal bearing and is optional if you'd like to leave it in there or not provided you didn't damage it to much during removal of the bearing which sometimes happens.

The zerk plug fitting is mainly used to help remind the "next" servicing person to not add any grease to a bearing that isn't able to accept any grease any longer.

Just lube up the O-rings on the drive shaft as the first two O-rings slide through the center of the bearing then the rear bigger O-ring rest within the center of the bearing.

I put a coat of grease on the bearing to keep corrosion down and hopefully make it easier to come out down the road. Also use grease on the oring, a light coat on both sides of the gasket keeps you from giving to scrape it off, light coat on studs for corrosion. As the saying goes , any grease will do...

Bearing went in with ease. After 4 days in the fridge it went 1/3 into the housing by hand. Two good shots with 3" pvc and and a sledgehammer and it was done.
