1990 120HP force outboard. Last season we noticed that our outboard would start in gear. It is a safety concern, it was a huge suprise when the boat jumped forward.

We replaced "the switch" that the marine store gave us but it still starts in gear.

Any hints?

thanks

Re: Neutral Switch

Check continuity between the wires connected to the switch. There should be an short or near zero ohms when the selector is in neutral. Watch the switch when moving shifter out of neutral. You should see the switch contact move off the tower and the ohm meter should read infinate ohms (you should also hear a click as the switch opens). You may have to move, raise or adjust the switch to get it right. There should be slots that the switch mount to that make it adjustable.
