Dear Forum,

Can someone tell me how to jumper past this switch or how to do a thorough check on this switch? If this switch is defective will the motor even turn over when in the neutral position on the remote control? Also, will this switch allow the coils to not fire if bad? I am unsure of what this switch does if bad, what ignition components does it affect?

Re: Neutral Start switch

Hard to say without a model.....lots of different engines out there.

Typically the Neutral Start Switch prevents cranking. It doesn't affect the ignition....

Re: Neutral Start switch

OK, Sounds like a Merc. Neutral safety switch will not allow motor to be cranked if not in neutral. It does not affect ignition or anything else.

Turn and hold the key in the start position. Now rock the throttle handle and see if she will crank.

Re: Neutral Start switch

Thanks Chris, I went through the Starting troubleshooter in my Mercury manual and found my starting solenoid is bad. The solenoid will click when I turn the key to the start position, but will not pass the juice off to the starter to engage it. After taking the solenoid apart I noticed the contacts for the negative and positive battery posts were both corroded beyond being a good contact point for the solenoid plunger. I should have realized that when the solenoid was clicking and engaging when I turned my ignition key to the start posistion that the neutral start switch was not the problem! Pardon me for being negligent!!
