Re: Neutral or in gear?

I never thought of this!!! Perhaps I could apply the coating used on the tiles of the space shuttle to withstand the friction and heat of re-entry into the atmosphere? Anybody know where I could get this? Do you think it has anti-fouling quality's? Can it be sprayed on, or is it brush on only? Do you suppose it comes in blue, or only black and white? :p :D ;)

The vasoline guys should have some input on that.

The "wear" may occur on the water pump impeller - I believe it will be spinning anytine the propeller spins

aaah, thats why engines always overheat idling at the dock !

i trailer in gear and WOT. a spinning prop ( unless you have a duoprop) would create a torque which will pull the trailer to the side and may have severe handling characteriatics. pushing WOT gives a unique airflow through the engine because the intakes are fully open. and slipping the boat with the lever at WOT gives me the needed respect at the ramp since all know whatkind of ride i prefer... beyond that its i think o complete non issue.

Re: Neutral or in gear?

I thought this topic was a joke until I started reading some of the posts. An outboard should not be shifted into any gear unless its running. BRP, Yamaha, Merc, etc etc have all put out TSB's in the past about shifting engines into gear without running, has to do with the meshing of the gears. Those TSB's have been posted here over the years and many many experts on this forum recommend that you dont shift an engine when its not running. Even if the prop did spin when towing, which the likely hood of that is low unless you are towing with the prop above or below the boat, its not going to spin faster than it would if you were running down the lake at WOT and the lower unit is full of high quality gear lube, so wear is not an issue. My manual for my Johnson says not to shift unless the engine is running.

Please tell me you were joking that you thought he was serious! :)

I am certain that a few of the posters in this thread agreed with his theory though!

Just don't tow it really fast in gear with the ignition on, it'll work just like pop-starting a stickshift car ;)

if you're really that worried about the prop spinning, duct tape it in place.
