Neutral Button on Shifter

Came back to my boat moored at a guest dock and found the neutral button missing from my shifter. I thought I had been vandalized, but then I found it laying on the floor, so it must of just popped off when I docked. I pressed it back in place and was able to start the boat in neutral, but the button now feels loose. The part didn't look broken when I pressed it back in, so is this a common wear item that just works loose eventually? I see I can purchase a new one for under $10, so that is my next move. I've read that I need to place the shifter in full forward to snap out the old one again, and then I just snap in the new one when the shifter is in the neutral position. Is this correct? Thank you.
