so. this might be a long story, but its worth it. Let me start off with saying im 16, love fixing up boats and wanted to have a carport to build through the winter. My neighbors had "ISSUES" backing out of there driveway. My dads 1973 Coupe De Ville was on the side of our property, it had a snowbank next to it and they constantly hit it throughout the winter, damaging and smashing the drivers side, they denied it for a bit but finally gave it up and we filled a claim. They moved in and built the house about 1 year ago, the car has been there for 10+ years, we have lived hear basically all of my life. It is not a busy road at all. I built my carport about 2 weeks ago there, something I was proud of because of all the hard work leveling I did. It took a full day, then I built a very nice workbech, plywood floors, moved and organized all of my tools. I just was finishing up at 5pm sanding, this neighbor's wife walks and and starts telling me I need a permit to build a carport, it was too close to the road (ON OUR PROPERTY) The street they back up into is a 2 car street, they have backup camreas and there drive way is literally 30 feet long, I DONT KNOW? IS THAT NOT ENOUGH ROOM!!!!!!

Go over and be very nice to the woman, explaining that the carport is really just a temporary structure while you do some repairs on your boat....will be removed after repairs are complete...should buy you a year or so before she calls the law or building code people....by then you may be moved on or she may be gone....

Chris, she may be right, depending on your municipality, township, or governing body. I would find out what the requirements are for a building permit, and what the set backs are before you say too much to her. You MAY be in a situation where you need to eat some humble pie, or she could press the issue and make you take down your carport. Please understand I am not saying she is right and you are wrong, but she COULD be right. You need to find out first. If she is correct, then you need to act accordingly. Just a thought.

A Building Permit would be good for you. Probably cannot do much to a house or property without one, legally.

If you are 16 years old, who is the owner of the property as they would be on the hook for not having filed a permit?. Frankly, there is probably a lot that can be done on the inside of a house and be able to 'get away' without filing a permit, but external structures, too obvious to hide.

Backing out of the driveway has nothing to do with the permit.

Chris, it is always better to talk, calmly and maturely to neighbors, before saying things that will cause much issues forever. Try being nice to her and do look into the building permit. Because if she is right, you could be paying a fine and have to remove the structure. So approach it with nice thoughts and kind words and solve the issue with them first. Who knows, it could work out to be your best friends afterwards. :noidea:

If it's not closed in it may not need a permit .. Just gunna have to do some research.. If it's on the city easement then it may be a problem .Permit or not ...

Chrisravosa36 - Watch your language in the forum. If you talk your neighbor using the same words, don't expect much!

I understand. There is a BIG RED P in my front window for the building permit (I am doing a garage). It is worth going through the steps.

I have no idea about your area, but where I live, if you build anything that has a roof or cover over it, it has to have a building permit...first! And if your neighbors do report that carport section you built, you seriously could be in for a pretty substantial fine and forced to remove the structure and apply for a building permit to rebuilt it again. I say that because YOU have to really think about such things when dealing with neighbors. Making good neighbors goes a long ways to peace in the neighborhood. The opposite will stay with you all forever and only escalate to more harsh events...guaranteed. A smart person fines way to mend feelings and make friends... JMHO!

Excuse me????? I own a trailer park and NONE of my trailers or tenants look like/are that. Be careful how you classify people.

Those trailer park people don't know how to spell and use bad grammar too!

I agree with all suggestions here. Regarding the building permit, I suggest looking up the town zoning and ordinances so you can build your own knowledge first - before talking to others (respectfully) about your situation.

Give the kid a break...he's only 16. If you give him constructive advice, he might learn. If you belittle him, it's just making you feel better.

When do we stop giving breaks? 17, 18, when? He isn't exempt from being civil, it's expected.. Respect is a two way street.

He has gotten plenty of constructive advice.

On that note, seeing that there is nothing more to be gained, so this thread is closed.
