I Just purchased a 15' 150 Sierra Starline w/mercruiser mcm120. I have never owned an inboard/ outboard before. I took it to the lake saturday, It ran great for about Ten minutes then started to slow down and smoke out of engine compartment. I babied it back and trailered it. I found oil leaks getting on block causing smoke. No big deal this i can fix. but i do need a new carb due to engine cover sitting on spark arrestor and breaking carb housing. but the question i have is when i went to drain block, I pulled bleeders and block was as dry as a bone! Would this be a waterpump issue or what and where is the water pump????? and if the block got hot enough to slow boat down did i possibly crack a block. I checked the oil its good but with no water in block IDK!!

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard Redneck,... That don't sounds to good...

Head on up to the Adults Only section at the top of this forum,...
In there, you'll find a Gold mine of information about your I/O,.. Including the factory manuals,...
You'll probably need #1, but you don't state a vintage...

The raw water pump is mounted on the top of the lower unit,..
You need to split the lower unit from the Upper to get at it...

Good Luck,....

When you drained the block; did you poke around in the drain holes with a nail or something? I would bet if you didn't you will find some rust and crud blocking the drain holes. Always got to probe for water.

Yeah i've had those holes block up pretty good. Make sure you probe all around and work all that rust out. Maybe a metal coat hanger and get it to go into the water jacket a ways.
