needle valve ??

I replaced the needle valves in my 89 , 48hp evinrude carbs (e48eslcer). I read some where to pull the adaptor above them out was to bend a hook on paper clip and pull them out. That did'nt work for me. Any sugestions? (slow speed valves) bsandy
