1992 johnson 140 looper (v4). Got out there to do some maintenance today, and decided to run the engine a bit on the muffs since it's been a couple of weeks and I didn't fog it yet this winter. In my haste, I completely forgot to turn on the ON lever at the muffs and ended up running it for about 1-2 minutes without any water going through it. Once I realized my blunder, I turned them on and had a good tell-tale stream so I figured all was well. A few minutes later I start seeing milky oil sludging out from the little vents above the AV
Plate (as shown in the pics).

I was actually about to change the oil, slap on a new prop (with some new grease on the shaft), and change the impeller, casing, and gasket anyways later on this month, but now I'm guessing I've blown at least one seal. Any ideas on which seals I should go ahead and purchase before taking it all apart, and is it all easily accessable? Never done an impeller change out before and wasn't planning on doing seals too... No idea as to the difficulty level for a backyard enthusiast. Links to any vids would be AWESOME... Also other than draining what may be left of the current oil, what kind of cleanup will be necessary if the oil and water mixed? Thx all!

On a 30 year old motor you now need a seal kit and a completer water pump kit.---Impeller is shot and pump housing is damaged from heat.------Stainless cup in pump may have rotated.

Ok. No problem. On this pic could someone tell me what exactly the diagram numbers are I need to buy other than the impeller and housing? 48628.gif

That sludge is from unburnt fuel in exhaust not lower unit oil. As Racer stated you need to replace water pump assy and seals on driveshaft as they could have heat damage

Which parts on the diagram are those?

??----Parts are #7 and #8 on the diagram.----They fit in #6 housing use a new O-ring on that housing too.-----Replace O-ring on shift rod too.----Item #25 on the diagram.---Gasket #27 on the cover.------Study about " shift rod height " adjustment too.

Which gasket/o-ring is it that stops that from happening? I'm already going to be getting all the ones others have mentioned but just for my own knowledge I'd like to know. Number of it on the diagram would be great if you know. Thanks for the reply!

Oil is mixed with the fuel !----That oil goes through the motor.-----Some of that fuel mixed with oil goes right through the motor and is wasted.----There is no o-ring or gasket that can stop that sludge from appearing.

Ah... So as I'm understanding it, my issue with all that sludge isn't the water pump at all, but rather just unburnt fuel/oil mixing with the gas. Correct? It's never done this before... so is it just something that happens from time to time or is something wrong with my motor that causes this to happen?

Sorry----Sometimes it is difficult to explain simple stuff to a first time outboard owner.

Ok... Since it's simple, hopefully you can answer this for me. Is the sludge normal or no? What can be done to prevent it? and does it mean I have an issue that needs addressing in the engine or with my fuel?

When a 2 stroke is running some gas / oil mix goes right through the motor and is wasted.----It is not even compressed / burned.-----Yes , whenever the motor is running this is going on.----It is the nature of a 2 stroke motor.

Got it. Thx. I was just concerned because it's never done that on the muffs before, and there was a lot of it leaking out of there. Since it happened right after I ran it with no water for a minute, I thought I'd blown a seal. I'll still be replacing the whole water pump assembly and upper/lower driveshaft o-rings though as it is due. I understand it's a normal occurance, but I sincerely hope it's not going to spew out all that sludge everytime I run it now...
