Hey guys..

Any of you that have been there done that in wiring up the ignition switch & gauges...

I have the Merc manual DL'd..schematics totally make my eye sockets bleed.

I got some help in the I/O forum..But am mentally challenged in ths arena (like most..lol)

Even Don S chimed in to help..I am too embarrassed to say "I dont get it"

I have her wired up to turn over..but not firing...

The only thing I have wired is the ign switch and the push button starter button...I am missing something..(like brain cells)

I dont have anything grounded at the switch....No gauges wired..

I do have the nuetral shift working good at the controls.she only turns over in nuetral...

I need some stupid simple help..laymen terms and pictures..:D

"see purple wire..see purple wire attached to "X"...go purple wire go"

kidding but something like that..

I got a 5 gang fuse block for accesseries, but will not worry about that now.

thanks guys...

Kev,

So far I have purposely avoided the helm area as I also haven't a clue on wiring, and all my labels are blank after the stripper spray/spill.

Re: Need wiring help from all my Starcraft buds

This may seem dumb to suggest but my Merc. 9.9 has a switch on the front, kind of hidden, below the clamp handels. It says off/run I tried to start it many times till I found the damn switch and set it to run.????? the Merc 9.9 is a mid 90s 4stroke elect. start. Your switches look ok but it has to be grounded to the spark side somewhere . Good luck Puget sound.

Kev did you download the manual I put in Iboats in the Star craft section ? Page 41 has the complete electrical schematic for your engine.

Yep..Thanks Apps..
I also have the manual from the I/O forum..

What I have noticed is that my boat has the external voltage regulator mounted to the transom...

BUT...

When I bought her, and the guy fired her up, and when I fired her up a few months ago..this was not hooked up in any way....Wonder if it has been hacked by-passed or a different motor put in...

I did the jumper wire from bat + to coil + and she still didnt fire..

I am really missing sumthin that I am sure is under my nose..

Kev, I really wish I could help you with this but I'm the last one you want any wiring info from:eek: I had to bring my son over to help with mine and we basically just did the ole remove one wire and replace it approach till we got it all done.

Side note- I have to call the kids to re-program the TV remote regularly also:D

Re: Need wiring help from all my Starcraft buds

Ok looks like you have a 1968 engine I assume 4 cylinder chevy being it is a 120 hp. You need to start your troubleshooting and keep it simple and thoughtful. Your engine cranks over so your starter is working with your push button. It has been alittle while since I have done some wiring on my boat and I do not work on this stuff daily. I am a electrical engineer who deals with loading on 12,000-20,000 volt lines, but I do all my own boat work and have a dad who is a truck/car mechanic.

With the key in the run position you should get voltage to the coil. (around 10V because there should be a resistor or resistor wire that prevents full voltage to the coil when the boat is running) I have seen these resistor wires go bad. I assume you still have the old points ignition and the engine has not been converted to electronic with a whole new distributor. I have a 2007 electronic distributor in my boat this replaced the old points distributor when the engine failed 2 years ago. The electronic distributors are wired differently. If your old points have been replaced with an electronic module then the wiring will stay the same as with the points, since you do not have a whole new distributor housing.

You should also get a full battery voltage to the coil when you crank the engine over, normally in the cranking mode the resistor wire/resistor is bypassed to get better voltage to the coil for faster better starting.
If you have voltage to the coil check to see if you are getting spark at the spark plugs when you crank the engine. If there is no spark you are isolating the problem to the points or coil area of the ignition system. Make sure the spark plug wires are installed to the correct cylinders.

Points need to be installed correct and timing and dwell need to be correct for the engine to run right.
Read through the manual in your lazy boy rocker to learn more about the system, then go work on the boat some. A good manual will help alot.

Does the engine even try to start or back fire?
Have you tried a little starting fluid in the carb to make sure you do not have a lack of fuel problem.
Maybe you fouled the plugs?

Voltage regulator becomes a different problem. If after you get the boat running the battery voltage is not about 13.7-14.2 volts then you are into a different problem regulator and/or alternator problem. But this problem should not keep you from getting the boat started.
