I have an Escort trailer and i need to get the fenders our from under the boat. I want to know what that bent cross member is called. There are 2 of these. They attach to the 2 supports from the front of the traler. These go across and a U-bolted to the frame mebers and then near the leaf springs and fenders there is a straight piece.
Where can i get longer V shaped pieces. Seems i can still use the springs but will need a longer axle of course.
Thisweb page about half-way down is an aluminum V member i think I need Galvanized.

What this will do is get the tires out from under the boat actually the fenders then i can mount a larger tire/wheel new fender.

Why can't you raise the boat up to clear the fenders? Do you have a roller system or bunks?

I'm not sure what you are trying to do but it seems like whatever it is you are doing it the hard (and expensive) way.

Can you describe what you are attempting and why in greater detail?

Re: Need wider axles to gain a bigger tire size

The boat is on bunks. I want to get a longer axle and the two supports under the 2 rails of the trailer. I want to be able to step on the fenders and get into the boat. I can now but the fender is 7 inches wide and only 3 are out from the side of the boat. I also want lager tires. 12 is to small. I want 14 inch Radial ST tires. I saw the setup I want on a newer escort looks factory.

What are the supports called parallel to the axle?
They are bent in the middle to clear the bottom of the boat.
I can get a new axle no probles and springs. Money is an object however I will be getting new hub/bearings and wheels also.

Have you verified that you trailer is rated for the weight of your boat, RG?

Sure sounds like an overloaded trailer.

If you are running a leaf sprung trailer I would watch how far out you extend the axle, I'm no engineer but I would think that you would want to keep the tires as close to the springs as possible. What are the chance of just replacing the fenders with larger wider ones?

DougV>

Won't this make the trailer wider? How could you do this without re-bending the trailer frame?

Cross members.
--

I think you should consider replacing the trailer if it doesn't meet your needs. You are considering some serious modifications here and I doubt they would be cost effective. From your posts it doesn't sound like you have a lot of experience with trailer construction and you could end up with something that's unsafe. :(

You can probably put larger fenders and larger wheels on the trailer without modifications. You could bolt a piece of metal or wood on the existing fenders if you want to use them for steps. :)

Re: Need wider axles to gain a bigger tire size

Since Bayliner mounted this boat and this trailer it is not over loaded. If I can get the supports out say 5 inches on each side then the spring attactment point will move out. I will need a wider axle by 10 inches. I know about spring hub distances and must be kept short.

Basically the thing I want to do is enlarge the square under the trailer to a longer rectangle.
the fender and spring attachments will be the same the axle will be wider and so will the cross members front and rear by say 10 inches.
The springs will be the same distance from the hub.
this will get the tire out farther from the boat and i wil not have to worry about a bigger tire just a bigger fender.

Maybe tomorrow I will show some pictures this will help I think.
