I have a 2005 rinker 350 mpi xr1 ski boat, alpha 1 gen 2 2.0 ratio. about 2 years ago I had to replace the tach... faria, go figure, boat ran great but then if you hit a tall wave ( enough to bring the bow up so driver can't see )the motor would die, hit the key and back to skiing. it happened twice that year. then last year the tach died again, tach #3 back running but then a tall wave and dead, hit the key and fine. any thoughts on what would cause this? I don't think it's the tach because when they went bad the rpms were all over the place and bouncing wildly, never just died and nothing. I'm thinking some sensor might be going bad but not yet so maybe an oil sensor, because of the bow being very high maybe it sucked air for a second and "no oil pressure, turn off" code or maybe a knock sensor, just because it looks easy to change. anybody go through this? HELP!!! it's driving me crazy... short drive.

I can't help with the issue but you should have a 1.47 ratio with that engine.

Can you post the serial number of the engine and drive please.

Hi there! Trying to get a visual on this one.:) So the engine would die only when the bow was up very high? But did not die when the bow came crashing down hard creating a strong vibration on impact?

When it died twice, what was the fuel tank level at both times on the gauge? Around the same level maybe? You may have sucked some air in the tank. How many times has it actually happened?

I can't help with the problem but the Faria might have a life time warranty I know that I had 2 replaced for free

the tank was full. the engine serial # 0w037384 drive # 0w556455. as for the bow coming down hard that's why I'm thinking the knock sensor. it has done this maybe 5 times in 2 1/2 yrs. it happens so fast that I'm not really sure if it dies when it pointing up or as it's coming crashing down. just did a full tune up, cap which was original because the screws are black, was more green than brass, rotor not too bad and plugs were tan as should be but the gap was huge looking, I'm thinking closer to .080 than the .060 and plug wires were original 2004's now all is new. faria gauges are warrantied but it will still cost about $100 to renew, I'm leaning towards that this next couple of months.

The knock sensor is sensitive to a particular frequency created by fuel detonating, not the boat banging down on waves. And even then, it just retards the timing, not shut the engine off. There are a lot of things that can shut an MPI engine down. You need to read the ECU codes (if any) to see what is going on.

I've heard of the aforementiond fuel tank situation causing this and incorrect carb float too. If it doesn't do it when the tank is full then there is an issue in the tank. If it were electrical I think it would do it other times also not just when you go airborne jumping other boats all lined up Evil Knievel style.

I'm thinking of a loose connection or failing power relay. There are 2 relays, both the same kind. One turns power on to the ECM and the other to the high pressure fuel pump. If the ECM looses power it will die like you turned the key off. The fuel pump would be similar but may just surge and come back on when the contacts reconnected.
